I have a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it will die on me when I'm going 70 mph or at a stop. It backfires at times.I was driving and had the cruise control on when it started slowing down like it wasn't getting gas. When this happened I tried to accelerate but nothing happened. I had the gas pedal to the floor but it acted as if I wasn't even pushing the gas pedal down. Sometimes my car will drive fine with no mess ups for several days while other times it will mess up time after time. When my car does die the headlights stay on and it will crank right back up. I've replace the fuel filter, coil, distributer, spark plugs, battery, O2 sensors, idle Air control motor, and checked the fuel pump.
Mine did this same behavior. Look for the detailed fix instructions for shortening the cover screws on the ECM located on the firewall, passenger side. This worked great for me.
But, you did not change the crank sensor (on the drivers side of the bellhousing, just where it's a real pain to get to)
I just had this problem and replaced the camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, and coolant temp sensor. i replaced these items because of high mileage. try these but first check your relays located under the hood on the passenger side. sometimes they get hot and fail.

I had this same stalling problem with my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. I took it right to a Jeep Dealership and they found it to be the crank sensor. It has been running perfect ever since they replaced it.

My 1996 jeep grand cherokee will stop running intermitently, no matter what speed. Most of the times it will restart on the first try, if I am going at least 30mph some time if I pump the gas pedal it will restart, then again I may have to wait a minute or 2. So far it has not failed to restart. The gas filter has been replaced and there are 214,000+ miles on the jeep.
When I, try to pump gas it takes me a while to fuel because it kicks back like if it was full. It also turns off like if its not getting gas to the moter. Please HELP
I HAVE A 96 GRAND CHEROKEE THAT A NEW FUEL PUMP REPLACED INSIDE THE GAS TANK ,TUNE UP FUEL FILTER BUT IT WILL DIE FOR NO APPARENT REASON ,SOME PEOPLE ARE SUGGESTING A ON BOARD COMPUTER MIGHT BE THE PROBLEM ? OH YA I ALSO INSTALLED A COIL AND A CRANK SENSOR
