85 crx dx clutch problem with clutch not gripping fast enough
when i let the clutch pedal come out, the clutch only sticks during thelast inch of the release, and the car moves then with no slippingproblem, so, is there a way of adjusting this with the clutch cable adjustement, itseems so far from a normal clutch that doesnt seem feasible, ive tried screwing the adjusting bolt down and problem was the same, now i have unsrewed the adjusting bolt but havent tested and the car is raised now, is this a sign of clutch being dead ? should i replace something, what part do you think is to be replaced thx
Re: 85 crx dx clutch problem with clutch not gripping...
Sounds like the master or slave cylinder leak, maybe even a hose inbetween, check the fluid level on the master cylinder. Repalce what is leaking and bleed the fluid to get any air thats got in there out. I hope this helps.

would help if you posted the make and model ,as it could be a hydraulic operation or a cable ,then a automatic adjusting cable ,even a auto adjust mechanism on the end of the pedal ? If vehicle has been in water or muddy field then it could be the clutch disk is sticking on the spigot shaft .best advice i can offer is to ask a local garage to give a opinion
Hey.This is just a long shot. The throwout bearing may be sticking. Its attached to the clutch fork and contacts the pressure plate. It slides along a shaft and the shaft may me sticking up,holding the bearing in the wrong spot.I have seen it happen.A VERY SMALL squirt of wd40 can fix it.You have to know where to put it.Not so much it gets on the clutch plate.Ask a friend or anyone that may know before you do it.This is your 1st option before you have to do any mechanical work on the car.It costs NOTHING.Check it before a workshop rips you off.Hope this helps you
Try to double clutch the clutch
pedal. How to double clutch; push the clutch in moving the stick to neutral,
then release the clutch and then push it back in and shift into first or second
gear. If it works then it is not the
shift linkage and could be a clutch adjustment.First how far do you have to release the clutch pedal until the clutch plate
starts to engage? If only an inch or so the clutch pedal needs to be adjusted,
which is an easy fix (this is more common). The other possible problems could
be the clutch plate, throwout bearing of syncros could be bad. If it is one of
the previous problems double clutching should buy you some time.
if it has a cable for clutch you need to adjust it. if its hydralic then the master cylinder may be not bleeding off properly when cold or slave sticks when cold. you need to measure pedal free play that is how far pedal goes down before resistance is felt there needs to be 1/2 to 1 inch or so free play to make sure that the release bearing isnt riding on the pressure plate [would be the same as riding the clutch] the 1/2 inch higher than brake pedal probem can be adjusted on the pedal stop but shouldnt be the problem. of course the clutch could be just plain worn out to.

check your wiring for dirty connections or broken wires, you may have wires that are rubbed through or connectors that are not making full contact. you will need an ohm meter and check wires for continuity. a wiring diagram will be needed.
The clutch assy. is worn out. When a clutch is new the springs on the pressure plate sit flat. When you push on the clutch the springs don't have to move far to disengage, making it easy to press on the clutch pedal. As the clutch wears the fingers of the clutch spring move out, clutch pedal effort and travel increases to the point that the clutch will not disengage anymore. Along the life of the clutch the cable can be adjusted to minimize this. You have reached the end of the adjustment, sorry for the bad news but the clutch needs to be replaced.
i have just replaced an 03 civic ex clutch and transmission bearings due to a customer being too harsh on it. It sounds like its got a little life left in it if you are easy on it.
if there is adjustment in this model use the below walkthrough to adjust it.
adjust the clutch pedal,
1. if you look up on the top of the clutch pedal, the first thing you should see if a clutch pedal position switch, and right behind it there is a locknut, looens the locknut. once you loosen it, back off on the pedal position switch or adjusting bolt untill it no longer touches the clutch pedal.
2. now behind the clutch pedal, there is a pushrod. and on that pushrod, there is a locknut, loosen that locknut. Now turn the pushrod in or out to get the desired height and stroke at the clutch pedal.
The freeplay is the amount of push on the clutch pedal to where is starts to have resistance from the top. I have usually been told it should be set at 1 1/2-2 inches of freeplay.
Once you set it, tighten the locknut on the pushrod. With the clutch pedal released, turn in the clutch pedal position switch untill it contacts the clutch pedal. then turn it an additional 3/4 to 1 turn. And tighten the locknut.
Now on top of the clutch pedal switch, there is a clutch interlock switch. Loosen the locknut on that switch. then press the clutch pedal to the floor.
release the clutch pedal 15-20 mm (0.59-0.79 in) from the fully pressed position, and hold it there. adjust the position of the clutch interlock switch so the engine will start with the clutch pedal in this position. then tighten the locknut on that switch.
