96 deville new hub assembly stops rotating when tightened

While replacing the front right wheel hub bearing assembly after removing the old hub bearing there are 3 bolts that hold the assembly in place the problem is that while the bearing spins freely while unattached and after installing 1 of the three bolts, when 2nd bolt is put in placed (but not tightened yet) the bearing locks in place and will not rotate at all to allow access to install the remaining bolt. Car is in the on position and transmission is in neutral. Any suggestions?

    The abs wire was what i first noticed might be the problem, should the it rotate with the bearing or is it stationary? No, only left side of car is lifted up. Moving the steering wheel provides a little give but not enough to gain access to the third bolt opening. Did not try tapping it in as I am not the one who was working on it until this problem came up. I will try that and let you know. I assume there is an opening then that it must seat into at lease slightly right? Does it matter if the engine is started opposed to just in the "on" position?

    The wires will stay put as long as they don't get caught on the axle as you try turning the hub. You only need the steering unlocked, engine off. It sounds like it's just binding a little. If you put the car in park and have both wheels off of the ground, you can turn the opposite side and that should make that side turn as well.Try having the wheels straight and push the center of the axle in as far as possible and hand start the other bolts.It's kind of a pain, but it will eventually cooperate.

    ok, great!! Sounds like to me its either the ABS wire being incorrectly fed through that back plate, or he just didn't get the assembly properly seated. Thank you sooo much you've helped me a great deal in understanding the problem and I sincerely appreciate your time and patience. I'll check it out and let you know.

Are both wheels off of the ground? (shouldn't really make a difference, but you never know). Also make sure the hub assembly is sitting flush in the spindle. You might have to 'tap it in a little to seat it. And check that the abs wires aren't getting caught around the cv axle while rotating.

SOURCE: a/c blower motor replacement

As on another web site I used a turnbuckle ($4.00 and 7 inches) on the rt. front (as facing the front of the car) dogbone mount to gain the addtional 1-2 inches needed.
then slipped the motor right in ....

Remove the lugs than disassemble the brake calipers remove the disc take a 3lb sledge hammer and swing it and hit the back side of where the lug studs are sticking out

SOURCE: how do i replace bad front wheel bearing ?

Replace the hub assembly which can be bought for $58 to $100 from various sources.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Place jackstands under the cradle and lower the vehicle slightly so the weight of the vehicle rests on the jackstands and not on the control arms.
  3. Remove the wheel assembly.
  4. Insert a drift punch into the rotor and remove the hub nut/washer.
  5. Remove the brake caliper, support and the rotor.
  6. Using the front hub spindle remover tool, separate the halfshaft from the hub.
  7. Remove the hub/bearing assembly-to-steering knuckle bolts and the hub/bearing assembly. To install:
  8. If replacing the seal, drive the seal towards the engine. Cut the seal off the halfshaft; be careful not to damage the halfshaft boot. NOTE: If the speed sensor bracket is removed or loosened from the steering knuckle, the speed sensor gap must be adjusted. If the speed sensor is removed from the bracket, speed sensor wax must be applied to the sensor before it is reinstalled in the bracket. Failure to apply the wax will permit corrosion and may result in sensor failure.
  9. To install the new grease seal, lubricate the with wheel bearing grease and using the hub seal installer tool, install the seal.
  10. Install the hub/bearing assembly-to-steering knuckle bolts and the hub/bearing assembly. Tighten the hub/bearing assembly-to-steering knuckle bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  11. Install the halfshaft to the hub.
  12. Install the rotor and caliper.
  13. Install the hub nut and washer. Tighten to 183 ft. lbs. (245 Nm).
  14. Install the wheel assembly.
  15. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle.

Replace Front Wheel Hub Bearing 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2 wheel drive

Removal
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the brake caliper, caliper anchor, rotor and ABS wheel speed sensor.
  4. Remove the cotter pin, nut retainer and axle hub nut.
  5. Remove the hub/bearing mounting bolts from the back of the steering knuckle. Remove hub/bearing from the steering knuckle and off the axle shaft.
Installation
  1. Install the hub/bearing to the knuckle.
  2. Install the hub/bearing-to-knuckle bolts and tighten to specification.
  3. Install the hub washer and nut. Tighten the hub nut to specification. Install the nut retainer and a new cotter pin.
  4. Install the brake rotor, caliper anchor, caliper and ABS wheel speed sensor.
  5. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  6. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.

How do i remove the hub assembly from the front wheel of my 2001 dodge ram RWD?

  • Jack up your Dodge Ram. Block the wheels to keep it from rolling as you work. Get started by removing the first tire and wheel assembly. Remove the hub extension and the brake caliper as well as the caliper adapter.
  • Remove the grease cap, cotter pin, nut lock, nut, washer and outer wheel bearing. Now, pull the old rotor off of the spindle. Clean the area with a damp cloth to remove any debris. Pack the wheel bearings with grease.
  • Install the new rotor and hub onto the spindle. Replace the outer wheel bearing, washer, and then the retaining nut. Torque the nut to 30 to 40 ft. lbs. while rotating the hub and rotor. Then tighten the nut and install the nut lock and a new cotter pin.
  • Clean the grease cap and then coat it with new wheel bearing grease and replace the cap. Put the caliper adapter back into place and then tighten the two mounting bolts with a torque wrench. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  • Repeat this process for each additional rotor and then lower the vehicle. Tighten the lug nuts and test drive your Dodge Ram to make sure that the installation was successful.

    How technical is it to replace a front wheel bearing on a 2005 Pontiac SV6 and can I do it without any specialized tools

    you will need a big socket (20 or 21 mm) and 1/2 inch drive to remove axle nut and torque wrench to reinstall. The book DOES call for a special tool to get the hub off the axle, but I have never used one before.


    Removal & Installation


    1. Raise and support the vehicle.
    2. Remove the wheel.
    3. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut.
    4. Remove the brake caliper and wire aside.
    5. Remove the brake rotor.
    6. Disconnect the electrical connector from the wheel speed sensor.
    7. Remove the wheel speed sensor connector from the bracket by depressing the locking tabs.
    8. Remove the 3 hub and bearing assembly bolts.
    9. Install Wheel Hub Removal tool J-42129 to the hub and bearing assembly in order to remove the hub and bearing assembly from the wheel drive shaft.
    10. Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the steering knuckle.

    To install:
    1. Install the hub and bearing assembly to the steering knuckle.
    2. Install the 3 hub and bearing assembly bolts and tighten to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
    3. Install the wheel speed sensor connector into the bracket until the locking tabs click into place.
    4. Connect the electrical connector to the wheel speed sensor.
    5. Install the axle nut to the wheel drive shaft and hand tighten.
    6. Install the brake rotor.
    7. Use a screw driver or similar tool to stop the rotation of the brake rotor.
    8. Tighten the wheel drive shaft nut to 159 ft. lbs. (215 Nm).
    9. Install the brake caliper.
    10. Install the tire and wheel.

    2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    What is needed to remedy right hand front wheel bearing play on a 1990 d21 4X4 ute

    replace the bearing or wheel hub assembly.

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 2wd Models NOTE: Refer to wheel bearing service and bearing preload adjustment procedures found in Section 1.
    1. Raise the front of the truck and support it with safety stands. Remove the wheels.
    2. Remove the brake caliper and suspend it with wire, out of the way. Remove the caliper torque plate if equipped.
    3. Remove the dust cap and then remove the cotter pin, lock washer (if equipped) nut lock and nut.
    4. Pull the hub/disc assembly off the spindle with the outer bearing. Don't let the bearing fall out.
    5. Pry the inner oil seal out and remove the inner bearing. To install:
    6. Clean and inspect the bearings and outer races.
    7. Using a brass drift and a hammer, drive out the bearing outer race. Press a new one into position.
    8. Pack the bearings with grease until it oozes out the other side. Coat the inside of the hub and cap with grease.
    9. Position the inner bearing into the hub, coat the oil seal with grease and press it into the hub.
    10. Press the hub assembly onto the spindle and install the outer bearing and thrust washer.
    11. Install the hub nut. Turn the hub a few times to seat the bearings and then loosen the nut until there is 0mm axial play. Using a spring tension gauge, check that the preload (with new grease seal installed) is 2.2–6.4 lbs. (9.8–28.4N)
    12. Install the lock-nut, new cotter pin and hub grease cap.
    13. Install the brake torque plate. Install the brake caliper.
    14. Install the wheels and lower the truck.
    4wd Models The hub and bearing service procedures for a 4wd models are basically the same as those for a 2wd version, with the exception of removing the free running hub assembly and the bearing preload adjustment. Refer to Sections 1 and 7 for additional information. Adjust the preload after the wheel bearing is replaced or the front axle assembly is reassembled. BEARING PRELOAD ADJUSTMENT
    1. Thoroughly clean all parts and pack the wheel bearings.
    2. Apply grease to threaded portions of the spindle, grease seal lip and wheel hub.
    3. Tighten the wheel bearing lock-nut with a socket and torque wrench to 58–72 ft. lbs. (78–98 Nm).
    4. Rotate the hub in both directions a few times to seat the bearings. Loosen wheel bearing lock-nut.
    5. Retighten the lock-nut to 0.4–1.1 ft. lbs. (0.5–1.5 Nm).
    6. Turn wheel hub several times in both directions.

    9. Install lock washer by tightening the lock-nut within 15–30 degrees.
    10. Turn wheel hub several times in both directions. Wheel bearing should be seated correctly.
    11. If necessary, measure wheel bearing preload. NOTE: Measure wheel bearing preload with a spring-type gauge; measure at wheel hub bolt, with tire removed. The hub assembly should rotate with 1.6–4.7 lbs. (0.73–2.13 kg) of pressure.

    How to replace rear wheel hub

    Sodium based grease is not compatible with lithium based grease. Do not lubricate the wheel bearings without first thoroughly cleaning all old grease from the bearing. Use of incompatible bearing lubricants could result in premature lubricant breakdown.
    1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
    2. Remove the wheels.
    3. Remove the brake drum or brake disc.
    4. Remove the hub grease cap.
    5. Remove the cotter pin retainer, adjusting nut and flatwasher from the rear wheel spindle. Discard the cotter pin.
    6. Remove the outer bearing and cone assembly.
    7. Remove the rear hub from rear wheel spindle.
    8. Using Seal Remover (TOOL-1175-AC) or equivalent, remove and discard the oil seal.
    9. Remove the inner bearing cone and roller assembly.
    10. Clean the inner and outer bearing cups with solvent. Inspect the bearing cups for scratches, pits, excessive wear and other damage. If the bearing cups are worn or damaged, remove them using a Bearing Cup Puller (T77F-1102A) or equivalent.
    To install:
    1. Throughly clean old grease from the surrounding surfaces. If a new hub assembly is being installed, remove the protective coating using degreaser.
    2. If the inner or outer bearing cups were removed, install replacement cups using Bearing Cup Replacer (T73-1202-A) or equivalent. Seat the cups properly in the hub.
    If a bearing packer is not available, work as much grease as possible between the rollers and cages. Grease the cone surfaces.
    1. Using a bearing packer, pack the bearing cone and roller assemblies with a premium bearing grease.
    2. Place inner bearing cone and roller assembly in the inner cup. A light film of grease should be included between the lips of the new grease retainer.
    3. Install the retainer with Hub Seal Replacer (T83T-1175-B) or equivalent. Be sure the retainer is properly seated.
    Keep the hub centered on the spindle to prevent damage to the retainer and spindle threads.
    1. Install the hub assembly on the spindle.
    2. Install the outer bearing cone and roller assembly on the spindle.
    3. Install the flat washer and nut. Tighten the nut to 18-23 ft. lbs. (24-31 Nm) while rotating the hub to set the end-play. Back off the nut and retighten to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
    4. Install the new cotter pin.
    5. Install hub grease cap.
    6. Install brake drum or disc.
    7. Install the wheels.
    8. Lower the vehicle.

    How tight should the nut be on the front wheel bearings for a 2006 f250 two wheel drive.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    3. Support the front end.
    4. Remove the wheel cover, if equipped.
    5. Remove the grease cap.
      NOTE Check the wheel bearings for sufficient grease.
    6. Remove the cotter pin and retaining washer. Back off the spindle nut. Discard the cotter pin.
    7. Adjust the wheel bearings as follows:
      1. Tighten the spindle nut to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) while rotating the brake disc clockwise to seat the wheel bearings.
      2. Back off the nut 2 full turns.
      3. While rotating the disc counterclockwise, tighten the nut to 17-24 ft. lbs. (23-34 Nm).
      4. Back off the spindle nut about 1 / 2 turn.
      5. Tighten the spindle nut to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).

    8. Install the retaining washer so the castellations are aligned with the cotter pin hole. Install a new cotter pin.
    9. Check the wheel and tire assembly for proper rotation, then install the grease cap. If the wheel still does not rotate properly, inspect and clean or replace the wheel bearings and cups.
    10. Install the wheel cover, if equipped.
    11. Lower the vehicle.
    12. Road test the vehicle and check for proper operation.

    To check the wheel bearing adjustment, raise the front of the vehicle. Grasp the tire at the sides, and alternately push inward and pull outward on the tire. If any looseness is felt, adjust the front wheel bearings as follows.
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2. Remove the hub cap from the hub.
    3. Remove the cotter pin and the castellated nut.
    4. While rotating the wheel, tighten the adjusting nut to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) to seat the bearings.
    5. Back off the adjusting nut until loose (120-180 degrees).
    6. While rotating the wheel, tighten the adjusting nut to 18 inch lbs. (2Nm). Torque required to rotate the hub should be 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
    7. Install the castellated nut and insert a new cotter pin.

    I have a bad wheel bearing how do I replace it

    Hub and Bearing Assembly
    ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Do not begin this removal procedure unless the following parts are available:
    • A new front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477) (Step 1).
    • A new inboard halfshaft joint stub shaft circlip.
    Once removed, these parts must not be reused during assembly. Their torque holding ability or retention capability is diminished during removal.

    Removal
    1. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position and place the steering column in the unlock position.
    1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Discard the front axle wheel hub retainer. It is a torque prevailing design and cannot be reused. If loosened, the retainer must be removed and a new one installed.
      Remove and discard front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477).
    1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
    1. NOTE: Make sure steering column is in the unlocked position, and do not use a hammer to separate tie rod end (3A130) from the front wheel knuckle (3K185) . Use extreme care not to damage boot seal.

      Remove cotter pin from tie rod end stud and remove slotted nut. Discard cotter pin and nut.
    1. Using Tie Rod End Remover 211-001 (TOOL-3290-D) or equivalent and Tie Rod End Remover Adapter 211-087 (T81P-3504-W), remove tie rod end from front wheel knuckle.
    1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Use extreme care not to damage boot seal. Do not use power tools to remove the nut, or bearing and seal damage will result. Loosen the nut first, then remove nut from stud using the hex hold feature.
      For SHO vehicles, remove vinyl cover from upper link stud.
      Remove stabilizer bar link (5K484) from front shock absorber (18124) .
    1. Remove disc brake caliper (2B120) and support with wire to obtain working space. Do not allow disc brake caliper to separate from the front disc brake caliper anchor plate (2B292) to prevent contamination of the disc brake guide pin journals. Do not allow disc brake caliper to hang from front brake hose (2078) . Remove front disc brake rotor (1125) . Remove front disc brake rotor from wheel hub (1104) by pulling it off the lug bolt (1107). If front disc brake rotor is difficult to remove from front wheel knuckle , strike front disc brake rotor sharply between lug bolt with a rubber or plastic hammer.
      If front disc brake rotor will not pull off, apply Rust Penetrant and Inhibitor D7AZ-19A501-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C56-A to inboard and outboard rotor/hub mating surfaces. Install 3-Jaw Puller 205-D027 (D80L-1013-A) or equivalent and remove front disc brake rotor by pulling on front disc brake rotor outside diameter and pushing on hub center. If excessive force is required for removal, check front disc brake rotor for lateral runout prior to installation. Refer to Section 06-00.
    1. Remove anti-lock brake sensor mounting bolt and front brake anti-lock sensor (2C204) .
    1. Remove and discard lower ball joint nut. Using Remover Adapter 211-211 (T96P-3010-A1), separate lower ball joint from front suspension lower arm (3078) .
    1. Using Rotunda Spring Compressor 014-00781 or equivalent, compress front coil spring (5310) until lower ball joint clears front suspension lower arm .
    1. Using Front Hub Remover/Replacer 204-069 (T81P-1104-C), Two Stud Adapter 205-237 (T86P-1104-A1), Metric Hub Remover Adapter 204-085 (T83P-1104-BH) and Front Hub Installer 204-067 (T81P-1104-A), press front wheel driveshaft joint (3B414) from wheel hub . Wire front wheel driveshaft joint to body to maintain a level position.

    1. Remove and discard three hub and bearing retainer bolts from front wheel knuckle .
    1. NOTE: Wheel hub is not pressed into front wheel knuckle . Do not use slide hammer to remove a stuck wheel hub . Do not strike back of inner bearing race. Use of these methods will damage bearing internal parts.

      NOTE: If bearing carrier is corroded to front wheel knuckle , apply Rust Penetrant and Inhibitor D7AZ-19A501-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C56-A to the inboard and outboard wheel hub/knuckle mating surface and allow to soak.

      Remove wheel hub from front wheel knuckle .

    Installation
    1. NOTE: If wheel hub is damaged or if any end play is detectable, replace wheel hub . End play is not adjustable. If wheel hub is disassembled, the assembly must be replaced.

      Remove all foreign material from knuckle bearing bore for correct seating of new wheel hub.
    1. Lightly lubricate mating surfaces of bearing corner and front wheel knuckle.
    1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Knuckle bore must be clean enough to allow wheel hub to be completely seated by hand. Do not press or draw wheel hub into place.
      Position wheel hub in front wheel knuckle . Install three new hub and bearing retaining bolts. Tighten to 83-107 Nm (61-78 lb-ft).
    1. Push front wheel driveshaft joint into wheel hub . Hand start front wheel hub retainer.
    1. Slowly release Rotunda Spring Compressor 014-00781 or equivalent while guiding lower ball joint into front suspension lower arm .
    1. Install new lower ball joint nut. Tighten to 68-92 Nm (50-67 lb-ft).
    1. Install tie rod end into front wheel knuckle . Install new slotted nut and tighten to 47-63 Nm (35-46 lb-ft). If necessary advance nut to install a new cotter pin.
    1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Use extreme care not to damage boot seal. Do not use power tools to tighten nut or bearing and seal damage will result. Install nut using hex hold feature to prevent the stud from rotating.
      Install stabilizer bar link to front shock absorber . Install stabilizer bar link nut. Tighten to 77-103 Nm (57-75 lb-ft). For SHO vehicles, install stud cover.
    1. NOTE: Remove rust from the rotor and hub mating surfaces with a medium abrasive pad.

      Install front disc brake rotor and disc brake caliper . Tighten caliper anchor bracket bolts to 88-118 Nm (65-87 lb-ft).
    1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: The front axle wheel hub retainer must be tightened to specification immediately during installation. If the retainer is not tightened immediately, the nylon lock will set incorrectly, leading to incorrect torque readings and bearing failure. Any front wheel hub retainer that is not immediately tightened to specification or is loosened must be removed and a new retainer installed.
      Install front axle wheel hub retainer . Tighten to 230-275 Nm (170-203 lb-ft).
    1. Install wheel and tire. Tighten lug nuts (1012) to 115-142 Nm (85-104 lb-ft).
    1. Lower vehicle.
    1. Pump brake pedal prior to moving vehicle to position brake linings.
