Need to replace the rear end on a 1998 grand cherokee laredo but was told I needed vin nuber to find correct axle. looks to me like they are all dana 44's. any ides?
thanks
Call jeep and give them last 9 digits of your vin and ask for three things -Differential Type,Gear ratio, and Track lock- They will give you 1) Dana 35 or 44 2) Gear Ratio 3.31 or 3.73 3) Track Lock - yes/no
It is a 44 it is a aluminum case the vin does nothing you need the tag on the housing to find what parts you need take your time a lot of parts guys do not know what they are you can poss convert to a 35 if you know the gear ratio
WHY would you downgrade to a 35 if you have a 44? look further for better info! ( the 44 is 100% rebuildable and cheaper to repair than replace IF you have the skills needed)WHY would you downgrade to a 35 if you have a 44? look further for better info! you will need the same gears as in your rear end there is a tag that will say something like 3.23 that is most commonthere the same from 93 to 98

Hi there: Your VIN code refer at one 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 4.0L 6-cyl. Quadra-Trac, then, according with this, you must pay attention to the Standard tire size (in case of different tires in front and rear the dimensional data are valid for driving or rear wheels): Standard tire size: P 215/75 R 15 Tire width (mm): 215 Tire sidewall factor: 75 Rim size (in): 15
Make sure the driveshaft is wired up.All brake lines are capped to stop air getting in.Replace the diff oil and make sure it has the friction modifier in it or that you add it to the oil.(200ml).Check for axle seal leaks. Its also a very good time to replace the universal joint at the rear.If you don't,at least relube the uni.DON,T let the needle bearing caps come apart. if the car is on a hoist, allow at least 3 hours to do the job and time it so if you do need to get some parts, the parts shops are open(bearings, seals etc.)Hope this helps
You will need to remove the differential rear cover, drain fluid, remove wheel, brake drum, (rotor) . Unbolt center diff. pin, carefully remove (don't loose shims) push axle in remove lock keeper, then slide out axle, replace seal, put some grease on it, slide axle in reverse all to install.
its most likely the transmission i have a 96 jeep grand cherokee laredo 12 yrs old ..it went about 3 months ago.i would take off at normall speed and it would rev. to about 3,000 RPMS and then the gear would catch ,and give u wiplash.lol but then it got worse. it would be fine taking off then while i was driving ,,i would be going any speed but wen i got up to speed it would start reving high [the gear was sliping] and i had to get it rebult it was like $3'000 grand plus
Thanks RudolfDiesel!!!!
