My 2002 Malibu has been sitting in the driveway mostly unused for the past 3 months. I went to take the car out this weekend and noticed that the brake pedal had to be applied to the floor of the car in order to stop it. And it was a rolling stop at that. I tried pumping the pedal but did not get restoration of pressure in the brake pedal. What should I do?

My 03 trailblazer does the same thing and the service dept. told me that it was normal for this model to do that, it has never failed to stop but if your sitting at a red light you can feel the peddle go down to almost the floor but it stops fine and it has done this since day 1 and they say thats normal on the trailblazer.

I think you will find either the throttle position sesor or idle speeed control valve are at fault, niether will set a fault code, the engine computer just thinks the throttle has been opened and adds fuel, the idle speed control valve can stick at times and cause this this condition, wiring issues may be at fault as well, but this is fairly rare. I would suggest you tap on the TPS with a hammer handle and see it the engine speed changes, also clean the intake with carb spray with the engine running at high idle, hold the throttle valve slightly useing a feeler guage or match book cover, you may call if you like, Dennis 925-459-0571

Sounds like a master cylinder failure. Were you able to pump the brakes and build up pressure? If so, it sounds like an internal leak in the master cylinder, perhaps in the diaphragm inside. If that diaphragm allows fluid past it (through a pinhole, say), pushing the pedal will allow the plunger inside the MC to push straight in without actually moving the fluid through the lines, out to the brakes.
