The oil filter is in a filter housing located on the top of the engine. Take the engine cover off. The 3, 10mm nuts are located under the circular pop-off covers that attach the plastic engine cover. You should see the oil filter housing to the right of the engine valve cover. The oil filter housing is a black, plastic cylinder with a cover that unscrews. The filter is inside of this. Make sure you drain the oil before unscrewing the cover to the filter housing.

SOURCE: I am trying to change

Remove the plastic engine cover. A cylinder with a screw off cap contains the oil filter cartridge. Remove cap, the oil will drain into the engine, remove filter cartridge. Replace the small O ring at bottom of the center rod on the cap, and also the larger O ring on the cap threads. (The O rings come with the filter)

What oil type do I use...2003 vw beetle?

if U live in a cold climate use 5W-30W, if u live in a moderate climate with hot summers use 10W-30W, any name brand meets your engines requirements. Do not use any oils heavier than these two, it can cause engine bearing damage.

Replacing oil pan

not that hard, just the 4 bolts at the flywheel end can be painfull, there is a cut out in the flywheel to make it easier you will have to turn the engine over by hand to find them, use the proper vw sealant or you will have oil leaks,it aint cheap but its a lot cheaper than doing it again.......
