I have a 96 Suburban 2500 it has a humming noise coming from the tranmission between 45 and 60 mph but no perceivable noise below and above those speeds Can you tell me what might be the cause Thanks"

Humming or like smooth grinding.

I received your answer and thank you for that. Actually I changed the 2 front wheel bearing hubs and the noise stayed as was. i will check your recent answer with my mechanic. One precision: When car dips down due to smooth road unlevelness the noise increases and when it springs back upward, the noise disappears. I believe what you are sayoing makes lot of sense. I will report back. Thanks for your time.

SOURCE: 1996 suburban makes grinding noise in 2 wheel drive

sounds like the clip on the rear output shaft its probably broke. do this by removing the rear driveshaft, and the tail of the transfer case, there are 4 bolts holding it in place. then grab the output shaft and see if it has any front to back movement. if so pull it all the way to the rear and you should see a groove at the front part of the shaft where the clip goes. Then you should find the pieces fo the clip in the tail housing. One person said he found the replacement clip at a local tranny shop. I am calling the dealership parts counter for a new clip for my 97 Tahoe tomorrow. Hope this helps..

SOURCE: Humming noise in front end of truck

I'm having the same problem with my 2006 Chevy 2500 duramax...The humming starts at 25mph and then gets less prominent and then at 50mph it gets more prominent and louder, then at 60mph you can hardly hear it.....I did notice a little bit of leakage where the front axel meets the from diff on the drivers side.
Any suggestions?

SOURCE: Humming noise between 40-50 mph

I experienced something similar, loud humming/truck like sounds only at highway speeds, turned out I had a cracked rotor.

What could cause metal on metal grinding at 40 mph and above on '96 Pathfinder?

First thing is to check the brakes, especially the condition of the pads, and if you have worn right through them, the condition of the calipers, and finally the rotors. Sounds like one of these old the key.
In any case can you get back to us with the solution so that others can be helped in the future, thanks.

2001 chevy suburban. I hear a humming noise from the engine. Engine ticks while idle for after a few minutes. Ticking goes away when I accelerate. There is a strong vibration when I accelerate in drive but...

Ticking sounds like a dry lifter, when was the last time you changed the oil and filter? Humming sounds like you need a tire rotation because of uneven tire wear.

We have a high pitched whine start inside the cabin when we reach 55-60mph that seems to come from the engine. Any ideas?

could be the power steering pump! but it probably is the torque convertor in the transmission makeing that noise which was common on 96-99 models cause of the dessign in the tranmission and a run on faulty torque convertors try some transX in the tranny if that quiest ot down? then change the convertor

2003 Santa Fe has a humming/buzzing sound that can be heard with the windows down. You will only hear it above 40 mph. The sound will go away below 40. Any idea's.

Tough one; Is there a roof rack on that car? The cross members could cause that, they're removable. Try that. If it were tire noise you'd hear them with the windows up even louder. If not the roof rack look for loose moldings esp around the windows.
