I have a 2006 X5 3.0i with standard heater controls. When I move the temp to 90 degrees, the air come out luke warm. Before I 1) start taking the dash apart, or 2) Head to the local dealer, is the tabs that held the actuator arms on the air blend doors deep within the dash broke or what? I hope this is not the case, as it was a very expensive repair with the older 5 seriers

SOURCE: 1991 735il. Getting hot air

That is correct...How to correct it will take some disassembly if you can follow instructions and sorta good with tools and have some nerve then get a Bently Service Manual on your BMW... It will be the best 100.00 you spend on the car, If you are frugal then look for a used copy on E-Bay.....

SOURCE: heater not hot

does the heater core get hot, check the coolant hoses going to the core to see if both are hot, if they are U have a air temperature control blend door problem, most likely the actuator for the door has failed.

The A/C pump starts when i move heater controls to defrost or mix

Great question dustin but the A/C is suppose to come on in defrost or mix mode- this is floor & defrost. Does not seem to make sense does it. One of the things the a/c does is remove the moisture from the air. You need warm DRY air to remove the moisture from the windows. An automotive H.V.A.C. ( Heating,Ventilation,Air conditioning) first forces air thru the a/c evaporator core then thru the heater core and out the selected vent. If you only want a/c a blend door will by-pass the heater core which is controlled by a hot/cold knob or digital temp cotrol on the dash. Now back to the cold air problem- assuming the basics are all ok- Coolant is full, Engine gets up to proper operating temp-around 195 degrees- upper radiator should be hot. Both heater hoses should be hot. If thats all OK the blend door might not be working. It is controlled by an electric motor called a Blend Door Actuator which are prone to fail. I have replaced many on ford vehicles. Hope this helps

No Heat

It Sounds Like You Have Either A Faulty Heater control Valve Or On The High Side A Bad ATC (Automatic Temperature Control). Check The Hoses That Go Into The Heater Core Both Should Be Hot At Normal Operating Temp. If The Outlet side Is cold Or Luke Warm You Have A Bad HCV.

Heater problems

In all modern cars there is a tiny DC electric motor driven gear drive that moves a plastic door that blends heated and cooled air from the AC and the heater core, this is called (interestedly enough) the air temperature control blend door actuator. The motor that moves this door fails because the door starts sticking from warping, most common complaint is no heat but it can be no AC as well. To replace these parts (blend door and blend door actuator) you must remove the entire dash from the car. Always have this problem confirmed by a dealer or qualified repair shop as it is a very expensive repair.

Heater is lukewarm

Could be low on coolant . check this first .Then in side of the car work the temp lever and listion and see if you can hear the air box temp door is moving and if the air flow moves from luke warm to cold . if the air temp door is working and If the coolant is full you may have a themostat that is stuck open . which you would need to remove to inspect .Or if the coolant is real dirty you might have a plugged heater core .My opinnon would be if the frist two are ok then it would be a themostat problem

Suggestion: see if the blend door opens or closes completely to allow all air through the heater core. To see the blend door moving, remove the panel that says "Cut here for service" under the hood along the firewall. I have a 99 Bravada where the blend door keeps moving back and forth constantly. Changed the blend door actuator but still keeps moving. The air inside is only warm since the door keeps allowing bypassed air through.

If your temp is jumping between 150-200 degrees then I am guessing you have an air pocket in the engine where coolant should be. The air pocket moves through the engine and when it gets to the water pump, it looses prime and doesn't move the antifreeze which causes it to warm up. Take the radiator cap off the radiator when the engine is cool. Start up the engine and let it run until the thermostat opens up. As the air moves it's way to the radiator it will escape and you will see the antifreeze level go down. Watch it run and as the level goes down add antifreeze until the radiator remains full. Then make sure your overflow tank is up to the required level and I bet your heater works a lot better after that.

Good luck.
