Problem with 2001 Prizm '01 Prizm 5 spd: piston ring change possible without pulling engine (Toyota 1zzfe) Posted by Guest on 11/29/2012 Details '01 Prizm 5 spd: piston ring change possible without pulling engine (Toyota 1zzfe)????? Drinks oil and the head is being replaced. Can the ring change be made without pulling the engine?
SOURCE: oil pump and busted head gasket
You should not have to pull the engine to do this project. However there is a cross member under the engine that will need to be removed first. Once this is done you need to un-bolt the motor mounts. Then you will need to lift the engine with a hoist. Now you can remove the oil pan and then the oil pump. Hope this information helps. Good luck.

Yes it is possible but you will have to get about six inches of clearance so the pan will clear the oil pump pickup

Remove motor mount bolts and rear transmission crossmember bolts or nuts, suppport engine/trans. see if u have enough clearance between pan and axle remove pan. if not, split the exh away from the manifolds. worth a try

You can do that. I would check cylinder wall taper and ring gap. If the knock is coming from a rod bearing, I would plasti-gauge that journal first to make sure that the crankshaft doesn't need turned. Besides that, you should be ok.

you need to check i"m not positive on that head gasket pattern but if its upside down you could have covered a oil port causing your oiling problem
