Changed thermostat, grand prix gt, check engine light still on?!?

I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, great car, no major problems. Went to get my registeration smog check and failed due to "Coolant temperature below thermostat rating". So I figured start with the cheapest option first, changed the thermostat. No my SERVICE ENGINE SOON light is still on. What else could it be?

Service engine light on

By using a scanner only. Older cars you could disconnect the battery and it would reset but with obd 2 cars that doesn't work.
