1995 Dodge Stratus transmission

Sometimes the transmission will not shift out of low gear. It seems to give me the most trouble on warmer days for some reason. I have changed the filter and fluid. I tried doing a system check by turning key on and off, but according to the Chilton's book, the code is 55 which is clear. When the problem happens, if I pull over and turn the key off and sit for a minute, then start it back up and drive, sometimes it fixes the problem. But only for a minute!!! Some days the car drives fine. I just bought the car from an old friend of mine, any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks!

i have the same problem, on hot days it has a hard time shifting into 2nd and 3rd, and staying, it will slip back to first, on colder days it seems to be ok. i have to stop and turn the car off, sometimes it seems to reset the car to start over and may or maynot shift past first gear.

Sounds like a selonoid is bad or the valve body in the trans might be gunked up.

It sounds like a cooling problem, is the fluid being cooled by the pipes from under the radiator? I have tried draining & changing the fluid, it helps sometimes, but it sounds more like the brake bands in the gearbox need adusting, and that means going to an auto transmission specialist, they will know in 5 seconds flat.

Take a look at the down shift cable and make sure its not broken especially were it connects to the throttle linkage. And maybe try cleaning the electrical plug that plugs into the trans. Its about a 7 to 9 wire plug. They tend to collect water and short the wiring out.

Just check the transmission oil levels first, if they are low this will stop it from engaging into gear.

SOURCE: 1995 honda accord will shut off while driving

I chased this same problem on my 99 Accord for almost a year and a half replacing just about everything from the Alternator to the fuel pump. It turned out the be the main relay for the car. The part was in the ballpark of $25.00. Mine was located on the passengers side floor board panel just in front of the door. Hope this sends you in the right direction.

SOURCE: have a 2002 Dodge Stratus

Hello
You will need to have the system scanned and tell me exactly what fault codes are in memory the above information is not useful with out the code. All repair manual trouble shooting goes by the actual code, a typical fault code is like this PXXXX, with the "X" being a number from 0-9

95 dodge stratus transmission problem

Whoever told you that you need a new transmission was correct!! I had to have mine replaced last September. Unless you have a friend that's a mechanic it's going to cost you at least $2000.00 if not $2500.00. Hopefully you have some mechanic friends. GOOD LUCK
