If you can get hold of the fuel injection models wiring harness ,ECU and body control modules it might be a bit of a pain to do but I can't see why it wouldn't work

You're not going to get a satisfactory answer to your problem. In 1996, Dodge (and most manufacturers) went to the ODBII standard to be in compliance with Federal emissions standards. That means that the 1998 engine will have to be an engine only in your 1993 Dakota. No multiport fuel injection with a PCM to regulate injector pulse, ignition, timing, etc. Or anything else that is controlled by the PCM (air conditioning, etc).
Your options are to connect what works from your 1993 engine wiring harness, and replace any items that have no connection. Or you can try to adapt your 1993 truck to the 1998 engine harness, and use all the goodies that came on the 1998 engine. But you are going to need the expertise of someone VERY familiar with both generations of Dakotas. Good luck.

Remove MAF disconnect wires unbolt/unscrew, disconnect linkage and remove and replace. Im sure the wires are degraded in it and the engine wiring harness as MB was forced to use by the US biodegradable insulation on its copper wires from 1993-1995 just like saab and subaru.

engine wiring harness upper and lower could be degraded, coil could be bad, throttle positioner, fuel distributor could be bad and depending if its a half year car and you have an OVP that could be bad. Also after a full tune up have someone adjust the duty cycle.

Fuel relays dont normally go bad fuel pumps and filters on the other hand do. Also check engine wiring harnesses for degradation as from 1993-1995 MB was forced to use biodegradable insulation on there wiring which fails due to the engine bay cooking it.
