Service four wheel drive

2002 GMC SIERRA Service four wheel drive light came on now my push button switchs don't work and im stuck in 2wd. The truck was in four wheel drive and parked when i started it again the light came on. I had a mechanic check the code and it came up to a computer error. I disconnected the battery so the light would go out and took the switch out and sprayed it down with electric parts cleaner but it still wont' work. So now im not sure if its the switch or the acctuator on the transfer case or the sensor on the front dif.

Without further diagnostics, it could be any # of causes, but these are notorious for bad conections at the transfer case encoder motor and /or the encoder motor itself. The motor, when replaced may need to be reprogramed.Be sure the switch and wiring are functioning properly as the encoder and/or related control module are pricy$$

My 4 wheel drive switch flashed from 2wd to 4wd than went out. Will not operate into 4wd.

Most likely the actuator located on the front differential is stuck, or inoperable. Hope this helps. TJ

I have a 2002 gmc sierra 2500 hd and the 4 wheel drive is not working. the light comes when i push the 4hi button and i here somthing move in the t-case. i tryed a new actuator and still no 4 wheel drive?

It is the buttons. It is about a $50 part new on ebay. Easy to replace. Just pull gently on the dash bezel. I believe there are two screws/bolts. Pull it out and disconnect the wire harness. Then just plug it in and put it back together.

You probably have a bad encoder motor. It is located on the side of the transfer case on the drivers side.It is black. The other problem they had with these was the switch but you have already replaced this so your next thing is the encoder motor.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Front axle stuck engaged

w9fro..In1995, and other model years, the actuator used to engage the transfer case into four wheel drive is oil filled with a heating element.
When you select four wheel drive the element heats up, the oil expands and engages the transfer case. Unfortunately if the actuator fails, the truck remains in four wheel drive. GM has an improved actuator so the problem does not repeat.
As always, check the basics, power, grounds and switch at floor select before replacing the actuator.
Also, if the truck is truly stuck in four wheel drive, you can tell by turning the truck in a tight circle. If the front end wants to "bunny hop" it is definitely engaged.
Best of luck, let me know.
