Hi, i recently aquired a 2004 Acura TL 147k miles. Car takes a long time to start and when it does start it misses badly. It wont stay running in idle very long but if i press on the gas it will run and doesnt miss as much as long as i keep it at 2500 rpm or better in park. there is a clattering from the top of the motor when i do this. I changed the sparkplugs. they smelled like gasoline and some had a black buildup on them. I checked the new spark plugs the next day after changing them and repeated starts and a couple of the new ones quickly developed the black carbon looking buildup as well. I swapped the coil packs with ones i knew were good and no change. Timing has been checked and it is right. Also when i first got the car the Battery fuse was blown and the ign main fuse was missing, and there was corrosion around the battery terminal (has since been cleaned). Also a few accessory fuses were blown as well. All have been replaced and all fuses checked. Thanks for any help.
When I first read your question I would have automatically said it sounds like your timing belt is off one or 2 teeth and honestly that can still be the problem. But after reading more of your question it's become more and more puzzling. I would make sure your car was not a flooded car. After Hurricane Katrina I saw a lot of these types of problems. Cars that have been flooded with high water levels can do all kinds of crazy thing. From water getting into places it shouldn't. Such as your PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and other electrical modules. I would have a vehicle car history done by someone I trusted to make sure. It could possibly have a savage title. Ok so ive got a little more information. I decided to do a dry compression test. Keep in mind i cant warm up the car because it wont stay running. Ok so on the back three cylinders (the ones closest to the firewall) The spark plugs were clear, yet had gas on them. The readings (from passenger side to driver) were 50, 60, 50. On the front three the readings were 230, 250, 240. Yeah, really out of wack. Also the plugs from the front three had black soot on them. Why such a difference between one side and the other? Is it possible someone botched a head Job? Thanks for your help (keep in mind i got this car non running.)
Oh one other thing. When i tried to screw the compression gauge in cylinder 1 it only took maybe a revolution and a half to tighten up. In all the other cylinders it took SEVERAL revolutions. I double and triple checked to make sure i wasnt screwing it in wrong.. Whats going on with that?

You need to replace your IAC (idle air control valve). The IAC, like it sounds, control the idle of your car. When they go bad they will cause the low idle and stalling. The IAC is located on the throttle body and is usually held on with a couple of screws. It is an easy relatively cheap fix that you can take care of by yourself. There are six coils on the Acura and they are governed by the ECU. The crank position sensor feeds the signal to the computer and is located under the Camshaft pulley on the left (or front) bank of cylinders. You have disconnected it to get the pulley off and may have jammed the small male probes of the connector while putting it back on. You can re-align them and try again. The sensor also may have been damaged and is not "reading" and giving the ECU information to sequence the injectors. It should show on your engine fault code (OBD2 scan). Take out the ALT/Sense fuse to re-boot the computer codes and check. The 93 coupe has variable valve timing and lift control (VTEC) and the ECU controls intake and fuel pressure.
