My 2000 Elantra started overheating randomly while I drive it.
- The fluid resevoir is full.
- It can be hot or cold, day or night, up or down hill, while moving or idling.
- When it happens, I try to turn the heater on. If hot air blows out, the temp gauge drops quickly. Sometimes, though, the heater doesn't blow hot air out and the temp gauge stays hot. Then, after a minute or so, the heater will suddenly start blowing out hot air and the temp gauge drops again.
- The temp gauge has gone all the way past the red and then back down and the car never acted strangely (ie: noises, smoke, etc - no symptoms) until just the other day when the temp gauge wouldn't drop, the heater wouldn't kick in and then when I stopped the car and restarted in about a half hour later, it made a loud noise when trying to start. Then, it started and ran normally again.
PLEASE HELP! I need at least some idea of what the problem is so I can see if we can try to fix or it budget to have it fixed. We're broke and are desperate to get the car fixed cheaply. Any help will be appreciated!
First when vehicle is cold like in the morning check and make sure that the vehicle has enough coolant/ antifreeze in radiator and reservoir. If coolant is need use a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze. You will need some time to do this let car run at idle until the temp guage is in the middle NOT+ normal operating temperature. At this point if the thermostat should be in the open position. Let vehicle run and check to make sure that radiator fan comes on. This should come on when guage is about midway/half way. If temperature rises above half going to h/hot and fan doesn't come on, you either have a BAD FAN BAD FAN SWITCH BAD FAN RELAY OR BLOWN FAN SWITCH FUSE. You will need to check all of the following I will help if its needed. If fan comes on and doesn't go off and vehicle continues to get hot even with fan running. Feel radiator hoses and see if the lower radiator hose is cool/cold. If it is you have thermostat that stuck closed. Replace thermostat and fix problem. If all the above is good and vehicle continues to over heat. THE BAD NEW IS THAT YOU MAY HAVE A BLOWN HEAD GASKET /CRACKED HEAD /BROKEN WATER JACKET. Basically you will need a HEAD JOB at least a head gasket. ONe tell tail sign of this is oil looking like milkshake/chocolate milk-a creamish while residue in oil or antifreeze. Contact if you need hel0p. Good Luck and thanks for using FIX YA

I do have the same noise. I was idling and turned the heater on and off..nothing changed. But, this did change in the past. I did not notice the temp.. i will ck this out next time. It sounds like the fan that goes on to cool engine. But escaladed that everyone around heard it. I had to turn it off and start up again and it was fine.. Is something stuck..?
