Ignition locked; dash light of car outline with key inside flashs

On my dashboard there is an outline of a car with a key inside that's flashing. I can get into the car but when I put the key in the ignition it cannot move to start the car. What does the indicator light mean and what do I need to do to fix it?

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

The flashing light indicates thatthe security system is active. It does not lock the steering wheel. Do you still have the ignition issue?

There's a flashing light on my dashboard, it's an orange light outline of my Beetle with a key in it. Please can you tell me what this means?

That symbol stands for Electronic Immobilizer. Here's a summary of what the manual has on it... When the ignition is switched on, an automatic key data test takes place. The data test is confirmed when the warning light illuminates and then will turn off after approx 2 seconds. However, if a non-authorized key is used, the warning light will blink continuously and it says the engine will not start.

Dash warning light not found in manual - hot to turn it off

The flashing key-inside-a-car means the anti-theft system is working properly. On page 84 of the 2009 Prius owners manual, the explanation indicates that a flashing key-inside-a-car is normal, and is desired. It should extinguish when the automobile is operating. It may be distracting, but it's a good thing!!

Remote control programming

get into the car , close and lock all doors. insert your key into the ignition in and out 6 times or until your directionals flash. that's when the car is in program mode. you need to pay attention to it while putting key in and out of the ignition. watch your dash for flashing. its kinda hard, but you can do it. so just take your key and put it inside of the igniton and take it out 6 times in a row or until lights flash. when lights flash, put the key in the ignition and turn it to accesorries position (do not start the car). when the dash / cluster lights up after you turn the key, press any button on the remote. your hazards should flash on the dash again. after that happens, take the key out of the ignition and unlock the door with the door lock switch and open the door. remote is now programmed. congrats. you did it.

Ihave a 1996 Nissan Maxima. I am unable to use the remote keyless entry. I changed the battery but still no good.

You need to program it. Here is how you doit.
Step by step:

1- get inside and lock all door with the "power dool lock switch"
2- insert the key into the ignition 6 times "IN and OUT" nice and steady until your hazards flash on dashboard. You can just keep inserting the key until you see the hazards flash, but 6 times should do it / get you into the program mode.
3-once the hazards flash, turn the key to ACC position (dash light up, but car is not running)
4-press any button on the remote (hazards should flash)
5-turn key OFF
6-remove key
7-unlock door with "power door lock switch"
8-open door DONE.
Good luck

Keyless entry keylob want lock or unlock doors or trunk.change battery and checked all fuses.

You need to program the remote. Get in to the car and LOCK all doors with the switch on drivers side door. Take the key and insert it into the ignition cylinder in and out 6-10 times, until the flashers/hazards flash on your dash board. Or just keep putting the key in and out (nice and easy now, not fast) until you see the lights on dash flash. After the lights flash, turn the key into ACC mode to make the whole dash light up.(do not start car) .With the key in ACC position, hit any button on remote, that will make the hazards flash again. Turn key off and unlock door with switch again. Open door.DONE.
Good luck.
