Hello. I need to replace the oil pan gasket for my 1996 F-150, 2WD, I-6. Is this something I can do myself? Seems to me that some of the suspension needs to be moved out of the way or the motor lifted. I am familiar with working on things, but I have never tackled an oil pan gasket. What do you suggest? Thanks.

What engine size 5.0 4.6 4.9 5.8 tell me engine size i can tell you what has to be removed.you need a engine lift to raise engine just enough to put 1 inch thick block wood place wood block between front support insulators and support bracket lower the engine remove oil pan bolts that procedure for 4.9 engine. either way you need a engine lift to raise engine enough to remove oil pan bolts.job should be easy if you have engine lift and basic mechanic tools.WARNING DANGEROUS JOB HAVE HELPER OR SOMEBODY AROUND WHEN WORKING UNDERNEATH VECHICLE, DONT WORK ALONE.
Testimonial: "Thanks for the info. I will talk this issue when I can. I found someone who will help me lift the motor. Thanks."
On a 1992 dakota --I had to remove the front diff case to
drop the pan & do the gasket,so you may have to, if it won't
clear the oil pump or crank
Thanks. On the 2wd F-150 it seems to me that the two crossmembers/suspension components will need to be removed in order to drop the pan enough. Is this something that only a professional can do?
you have to remove engine mount through bolts raise engine with chain hoist just a little but you have to remove air cleaner assembly, remove engine cooling fan assembly and shroud to keep from damaging it. you need short lenght of 2x4 lumber between the motor mounts and crossmember for safety. you dont have to remove suspension components unless you have the 4.2 4.6 or the 5.4 engines you have to remove front differentials supports.
slightly raise engine no more than 2 inches watch other components when you slightly raise engine a little bit.just need enough room to remove oil pan bolts.

You'll need to raise the engine to replace the oil pan. Take the trans./converter loose, remove the engine mounts, wiring, fuel line, and anything else that could be a problem with raising the engine. You can use 2 6 x 6's and place under the engine mounts and rest the engine on these. This should provide you with room to drop the pan.

If everything has been installed correctly and torqued right you might want to check for crackes in the block or pan.
SOURCE: Trying to drop the oil
done this on several i-6 f-150s. slide back or remove transmission, remove motor mount bolts from frame(not motor), jack motor up as far as possible without damaging egr valve or wiper motor when they hit, shim under motor mounts so that when you drop the jack the motor does not come back down any(the motor is well balanced on the mounts, it will not fall out of the truck like a v8 will), then remove the oil pan. you May have to remove the pickup tube(usually not), and you May have to rotate the crankshaft so that the lobes clear the oil pan. this is a common problem with these trucks due to the size of the oil pan(Huge), and the minimum pan to crossmember clearance
SOURCE: Oil Pan Gasket
Before removing the oil pan, drain all the oil from the car. You should be able to remove the pan with basic tools, not sure what socket size though. Once you have the pan off compare the new gasket with the new one to make sure it is the right one. Scrape off the old gasket and replace with the new using a high temp gasket sealant to attach the gasket. Bolt back on to the engine refilling with new oil and checking for leaks. NOTE: your oil pump is protected by your oil pan so be careful not to hurt while sliding in and out of place
