I have a 1998 explorer and the 4wheel drive will switch on like it should and the lights do not blink or anything but I can tell the rear end doea lock in low but never any power to front axle in any range.. I need HELP!

  • Anonymous Nov 24, 2012

if it helps anyone, this explorer has no lockouts, all the front end is tight (gears, axles ect) and there is no actuator in the front end either. i lock it in, you hear the transfercase shift and the rear end goes in low but theres no power even to the front driveshaft... i could see if it didnt do anything but thats not the case.. I have read that the worm gear in the actuator craps out but if that was the case it seems like it wouldnt shift the rear end into low. I wonderd if the chain in the transfer case was broke but it hasn't ever made any bad sounds to point in that direction..

SOURCE: 2002 Ford Explorer 4WD. 4WD is inopertive.

put a ground strap from your transfer case to your transmission. also with someone listening under the car with the key on but not running put your foot on the brake, shift to neutral and turn the selecter to 4x4 low and see if you can hear the actuater respond

SOURCE: Left rear axle seal is leaking differental oil.

ok then here is the procedure  1 take off the axle nut
2 on the lower control arm you will find a large nut and bolt i belive the nut is a 21mm and the bolt side is an 18mm. this bolt is the one at the knuckle near the brakes. remove it
3 you will need to pull the knuckle out of the way or a helper to pull the knuckle out of the way so you can slip the axle out of the knuckle.( its a tight fit but there is room to slip it out.)
4 use a pry bar to pop the axle free of the diff. hosing its held in by a spring clip make sure the clip comes out with the axle if it gets stuck inside you will have to fish it out.
5 use a pry bar or screwdriver to pry seal out of housing then use a flat object that contacts the entire rim of the new seal so it can evenly be installed with out getting smashed and tap it in with a hammer. ( a good trick here is to use some grease and pack it into the new seal where the spring is this will prevent the spring from being shocked out of the seal during instalation . the spring keeps tension on the rubber in the seal so it stays tight to the shaft it is sealing.)
6 then revers the above steps. also make sure you are using the right gear lube it will most likely be 75w-140 but make sure you check your owners manual will tell you if it doesnt say on the diff cover. you can cause a lot of damage if you put in the wrong thing. and make sure  you feel the axle spring clip snap into place.
as a note there are two types of axle seals that are used on these so if the new seal looks different than the old seal then the folliowing will be important to you.the seals on these have been redesigned so if you axle has what looks like a cup or dust cover pressed onto the shaft where it goes into the diff the new style does not use this and it will prevent the axle form going in all the way so the spring clip will not lock in and you will have a leak. so you will have to remove it and install the axle without it.

What does lights blinking six times and elect. windows not working at the same time mean?

Hi,

Lights blinking six times. Which lights are you referring to? The ford explorers use sequences of blinking lights on the dash to signal different errors. If you have the cars computer checked for error codes it will give you the cause of the problem.
If it is the 4x4 lights blinking this is a signal of about four different possible problems the computer has detected. Your problem will be one of these. From memory I think one of these is for a problem with the doors electrics. As you windows have stopped working it is quite likely this is the error that your computer has picked up & is telling you to get checked.
Get the windows fixed & the error codes wiped. If the windows were the cause of the problem the lights shouldn't start flashing again.

No light on 4wheel dr control

There are a few things that would cause this problem.
The first and most common would be the switch itself is bad. the next would be a bad 4wheel drive encoder motor, this is the motor on the transfer case that is used to operate the 4wheel drive. The last would be the 4 wheel drive module.
You will need to do some testing, if the four wheel drive is working and goes in and out of 4 wheel drive then i would say it the switch. if it does not work correctly it may still be the switch or one of the components i listed above.I have enclosed a wiring diagram, you will need to do some testing to check system, first make sure all fuses are good. the fuses that operate the 4wd are listed on diagram, it will also tell you the location of each part. you will need to test front axle actuator and selector motor and switch, you will need a test light and a meter. hope this is helpful, good day.4_26_2012_10_13_14_pm.gif

Cant get it out of 4wheel drive i switched it over to 4wheel drive without putting it into neutral

- sent by jglaubitz via email -

The solution to the problem of the 1998 ford explorer was shutting the vehicle off in neutral tapping on swith a couple of times to get the 4wheel drive to disingage. eventually a new swith will have to be purchased.

1992 chev blazer tahoe lt.. 4 wheel drive worked last year. Tried to engage it this year for first time and would not go into 4Lo or 4Hi. Was in neutral. Start vehicle and green light on 4wheel option...

not a fuse if you have power to switch,if your 4wheel light does come on and is not blinking, check the little motor on the transfer case, tap it while someone tries the switch,it might just be stuck from not being use,if it doesn't free its self you may need to replace it.

1989 chev 2500 wont go into 4wheel drive i was wondering where it gets it power from to tell you when it is in 4wheel drive is there a switch on the transfer case to tell the switch to lock in the wheel...

There is a swith on the xfer case. Do this...Key on engine off select 4wd. With a 12 volt test light go to the front axle and disconnect 4 way connector and check for power to front axle actuator (About 2 inch in diameter screws into axle on pass side) I believe wire color is brown. If you have power you have a bad acuator (unscrew from axle). If you do not have power you have a bad xfer case sw or blown fuse.
