Fuel gauge peggs out

When i'm driving my truck down the road all at once the fuel gauge reads all the way full or on empty. Do you have any answers? One other thing the driver info center always tells me AWD not working but it always works.

The gauge doesn't only do it going down the road, It will do it sitting still.

I just purchased a 2002 Pontiac Aztek and my fuel gauge only reads full or empty. While on level ground in park or any other time. I have never been able to get an accurate reading. I have been told that it is the fuel gauge level sensor that is located on the fuel pump assembly. Is this accurate?

My 95 supercharged bonnivlle's driver information center won't work all the time along with the compass and gas gauge. The other gauges work fine. The others work sometimes but not always.

Mostly likely you have a tank mounted fuel gauge. If your vehicle is pointing down hill the guage goes up or down. It is usually the fuel level in the tank that makes the float go up to tell you how full the tank is, if fuel is sloshing around then level fluctuates. I would say that if it stabilizes on level ground and at a stop, and you can get a stable fuel reading then this is more of an annoyance than a problem. If you can get an accurate reading and you do not run out of fuel you may want to leave this one alone, you will have to drop the fuel tank and replace the fuel float on top of the gas tank which can be labor intensive as well as expensive.

If it has a OBD (ON Board Diagnostics) you may want to have it checked, sometimes fuel management problems will produce codes without the check engine light. I doubt it show for it is mostly exhaust or the actual expended fuel that is measured. Maybe worth a shot. You either have a bad guage, float or a short between the two. Sorry it cant be more simple solution.

Gauge reads full when tank is empty

You have a bad ground, you will have to remove the fuel tank and check the connectons on top of the tank, probably corroded. You can clean the terminals or change them.

I have the same vehicle and my car actually was full of gas, registered empty & left me on the side of the road..It was the sensor in the fuel line that had to be replaced.

I've only owned the vehicle for 2 days (2004 Hyundai Accent). Driving down the road the road the fuel gauge goes from full to empty...then after 30 mins back to full again. Can you help? Thanks,

Wandering fuel guages are associated with a bad fuel pump/sending unit in the tank. Probably one of the reasons it was for sale. will be about $200 for unit and $100 to change. Check your warranty for coverage.
Good luck

Gauge registers 3/4 full when full, then needle slowly goes down to empty. Flucuates between empty and 3/4 full while driving.

hi its either the fuel gauge playing up in the dash up or the fuel sender on the fuel pump in the tank

Gas gauge goes to empty and then full after fillup

very well sounds like the sending unit in the tank. Try running some octane booster and fuel injection cleaner in tank of the truck to loosen any deposits on the float.

check for fuel pressure and volume test, if good then I would not change the pump, but look as far as the ESC (electronic Spark Control) located below the coils. good luck!

2002 Chevy Suburban: Fuel gauge reads empty, tank is half full

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.
