I was driving my 97 ford f150 when all the sudden it started coasting and when i tried to shift into lower gears there was nothing. i tried putting the truck into reverse and still nothing. when i tried to put the truck in park it wanted to grind. i tried shifting to 4 high (electronic shift) and still nothing. i shut the truck off and shifted to neutral and put it in 4 low. now the truck moved through all the gears but when i put it in gear it wants to start pulling really hard and really have to hold the break down to keep it from pulling forward. when i tried to drive the truck i could hear a loud whinning noise and i couldnt get any speed. im pretty sure its stuck in 4 low but i cant get it out again. is this a bad shift motor or what? would that have caused my transmission to stop working in 2wd. someone said my transfer case got shifted into nuetral but i dont know how that can happen when there is no nuetral on electronic shift unless i put the gear selector on the column in nuetral.
Its Possible the chain in transfer case is stretched I had the same problem a used case was 250 at my local salvage yard
yeah he was able to find one for the same price. luckily. i was told a rebuilt would be about a grand and i didnt want to stick that much into the truck as its already got 310,000 miles on it but the engine is still good and strong with no noises, now i just have to figure out what a 1-2-3 accumulator is

check the rear differential as well as the transfer case...you may have broken something in both of them...i have seen it happen...since 4low uses a different gear it is possible for it to move in low and not 4 high

See if u have brake lights. This is what energizes the shifter solenoid. There are 2 fuses u can check both are in the under dash fuse panel. Fuse 23 (15amp) and fuse 26 (7.5amp).
To get it out of park turn igntion switch on stopping just short of engerizing the electronics then u should be able to get it out of park and into neutral.

shift linkage needs adjusting,,could be bent, easy fix, located along firewall to fram beneath the column, ask your son wut he ran over and didnt tell u about... hope i could help...:)

What engine? Rear wheel drive ?Sounds like shift linkage or cable out of adjustment slightly. Have a look at where cable or rod attaches to transmission for adjustment. If not sure of what your looking for get back to me with info.

THERE IS A SENSOR ON THE BRAKE PEDAL THAT RELEASES THE THE SHIFTER.THERE A 3 COMPONENTS INVOLVED.U CAN PUT IT IN NEUTRAL BEFORE U START THE CAR.THEN WIL SHIFT.
