Sudden onset of warm engine smell, could the fans have something to do with it?

Within the last couple of days we have noticed a "warm" odor from the passenger side of the hood. It does not smell like oil, wiring, or antifreeze...just warm. It seems like the fans are not keeping up with the temperature but I can't be sure because I never paid attention before. The speed sounds OK, I'm only referring to when they switch between off/low/high.

SOURCE: Oil leak on 1991 3.0 V-6 Engine

If leak is from top at rear my bet would be that valve cover gaskets are leaking. They are not too hard to change. Good Luck

SOURCE: My oil pressure light comes on at very low speed on 96 camry

Take a gauge and check you oil pressure. If its not low then change the pressure sensor. If the pressure varies and the pressure is not where it is supposed to be, then drop the oil pan and look in the bottom of the pan. If you see slivers of metal then the bearings are going out. Eather the cam bearing, rod bearing, or main bearings.

SOURCE: High idle speed when the engine is cold

The high idle speed at start up is normal. As the engine temperature increases, the engine idle should kick down automatically. Insofar as the emissions results, if there were a problem, the check engine light should be on. If it is, take the car to an autoparts store and have the fault codes read. Most parts stores will perform the scan for free. If the check engine light is not on, and the idle question was all you were worried about, you are good to go! Hope this helped and best wishes.

SOURCE: 99 Toyota Tacoma a/c reads high pressure on low pressure side

Does the compressor run?
Low side could be high without a running compressor.

A running compressor?
The expansion valve itself is about $50 and bolts in.
You will have to remove the 134a gas before installing a replacement expansion valve and vacuum the system before recharging.

Sudden Power Loss on Highway, flashing "Check Engine" light

I must say that was quite a bit of info for the first posting of which I am grateful. Most questions are 3 or 4 words if that.
I guess my first question is how does the engine perform now ?
Have you drove it since you got it back home ?
The biggest hassle of driveability problems is the need to recreate the event in the shop. If you can't make the problem happen on demand, it is all but impossible to diagnose.
I would want to know what the trouble codes were/are, what the fuel pressure is, and where the smell was coming from to proceed.
There is a long list of possible causes.

2000 Z3 2.0 Sudden onset misfiring with traction control light and EML light coming on. Happened as went over slight bump and noticed an odd smell ?burning which lasted a minute or so. Car starts fine but...

It sounds like you have a loose connection or wire somewhere, becuase you stated it started happening after you hit a bump which the jolt would cause movement in a component or wire causing some type of short or mis-connection to happen. I would check all wires, cables for loose or corroded connections, loose ground wires, especially battery and starter connections and tighten accordingly.

Noise from engine or transmission cant tell

The sound could also be from the fuel pump. This comes on a cold engine. The way to sort it is to change your driving technique. Do not accelerate too much till the temp gauge starts showing the change. for the first minute or two if you do not accelerate too much then you may not hear the sound the rest of the day. Let the engine/fuel pump warm up a little and then you drive your normal self.

2003 malibu engine idle @ 3500 rpm vs approx 500 in past. Sudden onset. Engine warm. Odour. Attempts to reset by giving a thrust of gas while in neutral do not help.

Your O2 sensor may need replaced. They are located on the exhaust, Typically 1 is infront of the catillic converter and one after. I would start there!
Good Luck!
