Hi,
Jaguar S Type, March 2000, 94000 miles, started showing warning sign "gearbox fault" intermittently. No noise and running smooth but somtimes erratic gear changes. Jaguar dealer diagnosis shows code P0795. Told I need a new gearbox £3500, but car only worth £3000. Is there anything I can do?
My father has exactly the same problem with his Jag. It's a 2000 S-type 3.0. Everything feels ok but it shocks a bit between the second and third gear. He's still in doubt what to do.
Hi,change the gear box solonied c.should b ok than ali g autos birmingham 07971335303
Unfortunately Jag dealers always say you need a new this/new that !!
I had a very similar problem on my first s type 1999. I was told it was a gearbox fault by jag dealer, but a local gearbox specialist disagreed. Unfortunately I went with the dealers advice and changed the gearbox - did not solve the problem - further investigation showed misfires on coil pack which confused the engine and therefore the gearbox. the gearbox was trying to compensate for engine power loss/fault - by changing gear eractically and then as the engine changed the gearbox was wrong so showed a fault !!
Anyway = short answer - get an independant GOOD gearbox specialist to test drive your car first ... really hope this helps as it will be a lot cheaper !!
If the J selector packs up on S type (1999 - 1997/8) you are screwed. The part is not available in either the UK Europe or the USA. the company making this part went bust 2 years ago. Your on chance of repair is to obtain the J selector from a scrap car, Scrap dealers are aware of this problem and you will pay through the nose for this part. otherwise your car CANNOT be repaired! Jaguar UK know about this problem, it featured in Classic car weekly wed 20/10/2010
The transmission is a ford 5r55n and is sort of special to the Jag. There is a broken spring in the valve body causing your problem.
It is called the 4-3 pre-stroke valve spring.
I did my own in about 4 hours. Any transmission shop that is worth anything can do it for you. It was harder to fill the fluid than replace the spring. Let me know this fixed it your problem. Robert

The engine light and gearbox fault code has come across my dash, and my car was riding a bit rough (sluggish)****. I went and got a diagnostic test and it said to be the catalyst convertors. I went to get that fixed and the engine light has removed itself but the gearbox code is still on. And it don't ride as rough jus acouple of jerks here and there. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Fault code P0795 indicates a "fluid pressure solenoid C " problem, and the causes are: wiring poor connection, solenoid itself or the ECU.
Threre a lot of solutions for that best one is replace the gearbox
But first look for another mechanic and try to strat from gear box flush and changing the oil in it for synthetic one for instance.
Good Luck
I have a Jaguar S-Type 3.0SE 2000 model and has been driving nicely till I parked it. When I started to drive and shifted gear from park to drive there is a scritch sound and the car can't move. It just goes its rerves up. Can it be a gearbox fault even though no such indication on the dasboard indicator?
Car fitted with electronic hand break which may be stuck on. Disconnect battery for 5-mins reconnect and follow directions on dash board.

You need to check all the electric cables that go to the gear box if they are in good condition. this problem comes about if the oil level is low in the gear box and mostly if the oil needs to be changed. start from this angle and let me know.
I know this thread is 3 years old, but thank you. My gear box fault light is on, my car goes into every gear except drive. I know how to get it into drive. I see spots of oil on the ground beneath my car. I put a white piece of cardboard in the spot and discovered it is transmission fluid. I wondered if it could be a leak causing the gearbox light to come on. I pulled into my garage to park it until I could find a good mechanic to fix it. When I put it into park I heard metal hit metal. I have not driven it at since then. What are your suggestions for me? If you have any, I thank you in advance.

2014 XF V6 Supercharger Gear module was sent to Xemodex in Canada. They repair and warrant this type of equipment. They found moisture inside the module. Not for sure of the source of the moisture; AC or spilled drink. They removed with vacuum and blower. Works perfectly. Fast overnight service.
Hi my name is Mohamed Bushruyeh h this gear box problem i think it was recall from Jaguar Co. & they should replace it for free have you take your car for the recall to fix the almost 9 or 10 recall for jaguar s-typ that was on the recall i believe
Hi I have a 2005 2lt x type diesel Jaguar and it will not start"
SOURCE: Gearbox fault of Jaguar S Type
unfortunately when that code, and that gear box fault light comes on, its pretty much game over for the transmission. It only a matter of time before performance of the transmission gets worse and worse. BUT that transmission is VERY easy to replace, i would check out a few trustworthy independent shops to give you a better price! I am usually a die-hard dealership, having been working at this jaguar land rover dealership for the last 2 years, but you are pretty much for sure going to be a cheaper price on the labor and like i said it is a pretty easy task.
My only precaution MAKE SURE IF YOU GETTING A USED TRANSMISSION THAT YOU GET SOME TYPE OF WARRANTY ON IT. Too many times have I seen customers loose thousands of dollars paying someone to put a used engine or transmission and have it fail almost right away.
Whenever
this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating
that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of
lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected
a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM,
SRS and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must
now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and
"scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the
problem(s)
