If all gears are shifting hard, may have a code p1811 set-trans adapt long shift. When this code sets it commands full line pressure causing hard shifts. Usually the pressure control solenoid is at fault. You need to have it scanned for codes.

SOURCE: 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix Thermostat

as you face the engine the thermostat bell is on the right (drivers side) Follow the radiatoe hose. Remove the two bolts and raise the bell still attatched to the hose. the thermostat is there with the rubber seal. You can gently pry the thermostat out with a screwdriver or something similar. Put in new thermostat be sure it is the same as the old one, and then replace or change the seal (be sure it is the smae size and thickness as the old one as I got the wrong size from Napa) Then replace the bell, and tighten, but not over tighten. I hope this helps!

SOURCE: 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix Gt not shifting into OD

this trans is the 4T65E. It needs a 4th clutch hub. The splines strip off around 120k or more because they weren't hardened from the factory. The new ones have the hardened splines. The trans needs to come out and be partially torn down. I've fixed alot of these. Change the EPC solenoid while you are there. They wear and hang up causing intermittent harsh shifts

You can drive them forever without changing the hub but you'll never have 4th gear

SOURCE: how to change light bulb in the gear shift of 06

Remove the center console.
There will be a bulb underneath the PRNDL(Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Low) - quarter turn to the left. Pull bulb down; put new bulb in - put back in hole quarter turn to right - reinstall center console...

1998 pontiac grand prix se shifts fast and hard, or shifts late. what can cause this

On the trottle body there is the trottle valve cable or TVC. This is what regulates the pressure in the transmission and determines how hard and when to shift. If you adjust this by moving the throttle cable forward towards the headlights it will result in an earlier smoother shift.

Our 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix is hard shifting. The diag codes that came up are trans codes P1811c and P1819c. Does anyone know what these codes mean? I'm having an impossible time finding them. Thanks in...

The codes mean that the Electronic Pressure Control Solenoid is going bad. The computer detects that the shifts are taking longer than 0.65 seconds. Then the computer commands maximum line pressure to avoid burning out the clutches, hence the hard shifting. My 2002 Grand Prix had the same problem, and I had great luck just installing a shift kit to speed up the shifting and haven't had any further issues.

What is the switch for in the lower left side of the dash on my 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix, it's labeled, start in second gear

with switch on, the transmission will not shift into 1st gear--it will start in second and then shift to third, etc.. This is OK for normal driving, but not if you start on hills or want to accelerate quickly from a stop.
