Replaced headlight switch on 1995 dodge ram 1500 now running lights, dashlights not working.head lights are fine now

Usually there is a circuit breaker in head lamp switch, that is for headlamps only. The other lamps are fuse protected, check for voltage to and from those fuses. Hopefully the diagram is large enough to read. I believe that diagram is for tail lamps. The black wire is ground for tail lamps, the other wire is voltage. I see two fuses in diagram.

88 ranger has no head lights or running lights. or dash lights

https://s26.postimg.org/gukptsw7d/headlamps.jpg

Click on the link.
Usually on older vehicles, the headlamps don't use a fuse, but, fusible link, as shown in the diagram. Usually the park lamps and instrument cluster illumination are fuse protected, like the diagram shows, Not only check the fuses, use a test lite to check for voltage at fuse and at fusible link. The wires on top of switch in the diagram are voltage to headlamp switch, the wires on the bottom is voltage from head lamp switch to component.
Usually one of the wires from Battery positive goes to fusible links, at the moment, I don't have location.
Hope this helps, a little. I just want to add voltage and ground both are important.

I connected the wires to the head light switch on a 72 mgb and the black wire melted real bad. How do i find out what wires go where

You need a wiring diagram. Use a multi meter to find which terminal on the switch gives power (12volt) black wires are always negative (-) SO WILL BURN IF CONNECTED TO POSITIVE (+12V) supply.

the headlights flash due to high current draw. It allows you to get of road at night w/o having lights go out. Is it one headlamp doing this? Are both low beam bulb and high beam bulb on at the same time? If yes, it will melt housing. Otherwise look for short circuit. This assumes you did not put aftermarket high current bulbs in your headlamps.

I will assume you have tested the bulbs, if so replace the head light switch, make sure the connector is not melted or burnt, if it is you will need to buy a kit from Dodge and repair the wiring harness.
