Why does 2000 Jeep Laredo A/C & Heater Shut off when I turn on defrost?

I have a 2000 Jeep Laredo. I just recently had the Heater Core changed. When it was being put in, my mechanic said he had to replace a few vaccum lines that had been broke in half. Well, now my heater works great in every position (Front Vents, Bi-Level, Recirc.) EXCEPT defrost and defrost and feet. When I switch it over to either defrost position, the a/c or heater completely stops blowing as if its been turned to off and doesnt blow through vents! It doesnt even sound like the ac is still on. And when in ac mode and turned to defrost, it shuts off and doesnt blow through defrost vents too but the ac light goes off.... what could be the problem? If it were a vaccum hose, wouldnt I still hear the system on and running just not blowing through def vents? Could it be a relay or switch of some sort? PLEASE help!! I cannot drive in cold weather without a defrost!!

SOURCE: heating system blows only cold air

it maybe a blend door problem. if both hoses at the firewall for the heater are close in temperature its not likely a heater core. the actuator for the blend door is located on the bottom of the heater/ac box towards the middle of the bottom. it will be a tight fit but you can remove it without removing any part of the dash. take it off and disconnect the power. start the vehicle and manually move the door and see if the temp changes

SOURCE: Heater problems on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Please Help!!

THis is a know problem with Jeep GC. If only one side is cold and the other is hot and there are no controls error codes. It is likely a broken temperature blend door on the faulty side (w/ dual controls). Dealer charges a lot to fix ~$800. There is a kit and instructions sold on EBAY to replace the part for $100. Seller claims that a relative novice can fix w/o removing the entire dash board as the dealer does. Has sold hundreds of kits....people seem satisfied....you may check it out. Search Heater Blend Door Jeep on ebay. Replacement parts are aluminum instead of OEM plastic.

Self Diagnostics on HVAC system. Jeep GC has built in diagnostics and will return error codes on the temp display if it is otherwise. Simple to display.
1) Press A/C and Recir button simutaneously
2) Rotate driver temp control knob clockwise then release buttons
3) If no controls error a code of "0" or "00" will be returned.
4) Error codes listings can be found on-line if anything but zero

Dealers charge $45 to run the same check

SOURCE: 2001 Jeep Cherokee a/c blows defroster only, no cruise control

There is a vacuum leak under the hood somewhere. Check the vacuum at the speed control servo. If there is no vacuum on the line with the engine running, follow the line to find the leak. The vacuum reservoir is mounted under the battery tray. I would look in that area after confirming no vacuum at the servo.

SOURCE: Jeep AC blows cold air at defrost and feet but not through vents

There is a flap that directs the air. the flap is controlled by a vacuum actuator. This is located inside the venting. The actuator is connected to little vacuum hoses that attach to the temperature control switch. Either the flap is stuck, or the actuator has gone bad.

It is a rather involved job to replace the heater core. Here is a link showing how to replace it:http://www.autozone.com/autozone/repairinfo/repairguide/repairGuideContent.jsp?pageId=0996b43f802d7d3c
I would first check to see if the thermostat maybe stuck open, which wouldn't allow the engine to heat up enough to supply hot water to the heater core.

Does it smell like antifreeze? If so your heater core is leaking and probably needs replaced.

I need help with heater core replacement for my 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo

Changing the heater core requires complete removal of the dash panel and plenum box. To do this you have to remove the steering wheel, steering column, evacuate and recharge the refrigerant system and drain the radiator. I would only consider changing the heater core if it is physically leaking into the passenger compartment. If the problem is heat transfer to the HVAC system only, the problem is more likely with the blend doors. Check heatertreater.net for pictures and diagnostic information.

Heater is blowing but its cold air not hot air 2000 expedition

Make sure the heater core is in the open position by using the shut off valve and turning it to open. next, you may have a malfunction in the direction door the directs the air flow in the dash. a lever may have become lose or separated. may be a bad servo motor not directing the door to move to the heater position. i would start by checking that shut off valve first on the heater core.
