You probably have a vacuum/air intake leak.
With the engine idling, spray very short bursts of starting fluid/ether around the intake and surrounding engine bay and wait a second. If the engine surges, there is an intake leak which you can identify by closing in with the ether.
NOTE:
ALWAYS USE VERY SMALL SQUIRTS IN A DIRECTED AREA AND WAIT FOR IT TO VENTILATE BEFORE TRYING AGAIN ELSEWHERE
Put car outside,
do this in a ventilated area,
dont smoke
have a blanket handy in case of a backfire fire.
DONT spray ether idirectly into the air intake when the engine is running

A bad intake leak is audible by a hissing sound. A bad rubber hose is often the cause.
Any vacuum hose under the hood can cause this.
The PCV valve which can also cause this code when faulty, should be replaced as a matter of course. its in the valve cover and only costs a coupla bucks. They are easy to fit.
Hope that helps
pls be conservative with the ether its not good for your engine in large doses!!

Engine check light on error code 1 is P0171 system too lean bank 1 error code 2 is P0174 system too lean bank 2

P0171 system too lean bank 1
P0174 system too lean bank 2
links to information on the codes

it means that the O2 sensors in your vehicle detected a lean condition in their respective banks. this could be caused by a dirty MAF (mass air flow) sensor or a vacuum leak downstream from the MAF sensor

sometimes you can clean the MAF with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner but be sure to take it off the vehicle first. be careful not to damage the MAF while spraying the cleaner, and allow it to dry completely before installing it on the vehicle.

SES light on code P0171, 2005 Xterra, what to do??

P0171 is a lean oxygen sensor code for bank 1 on your engine.
It indicates that there is a lean condition (engine not getting enough
fuel or getting too much air) on that side of your engine.
Bank 1 is always the side of the engine where #1 cylinder is
located. In your case it is front-most cylinder on the right side
of the engine. (As viewed from the driver's seat)
So bank one is the passenger side.

If there are any other engine control codes, you need to fix those
first, as they may be the cause of the lean condition.

If that is the only code you are getting, then diagnostic testing
needs to be performed to determine the actual cause of the problem.

Possible causes are:

* Intake air / vacuum leaks
* Faulty / dirty fuel injector(s)
* Incorrect fuel pressure (Likely to cause both P0171 and P0174 at the same time)
* Low fuel volume (Pressure OK) (restricted fuel filter,etc.)
* Fauly Mass Airflow Sensor
* incorrect PCV hose connection
* Exhaust gas leaks
* Faulty Air Fuel Ratio Sensor

What is the code P1451 solution? Runs great, codes P1451, P0171 and P0174 are coming up and the engine light is on. Car needs to get inspected but codes need to be fixed.

P0171 - System too Lean (Bank 1)
P0174 - System too Lean (Bank 2)
P1451 - EVAP Control System Canister Vent Solenoid Circuit Malfunction
I'm afraid I don't have enough info to tell you how to fix the P1451 but I'm certain it's the cause of the other two codes.

An Engine Light came on the dashboard of my 2003 Ford Windstar.The code came up saying p0171 (Fuel System too lean.(Cylinder bank 1) What does this mean?

P0171=System Too Lean Bank 1,
not cylinder 1,it means the oxygen sensor on the drivers side exhaust was stuck on lean and set a code.
doesn't mean you need to change the oxygen sensor yet,first clear the code and see if it corrected its self.
