The Malfunction Indicator light on my 2003 Toyota Avalon has come on. What does it mean?
SOURCE: VSC and Malfunction Indicator came on and stays on
When you say malfunction indicator , do you mean `check engine`` light.
These paired lights can indicate a change in engine air flow and fuel mixture. Try a fresh tank of premium fuel, but first a unscrew and re-screw the gas cap until it ratchets into place. The lights can be triggered by a loose gas cap, a fouled O2 sensor, and several other emission related problems including sticking throttle body components, etc.
This can sometimes be sprayed with carb cleaner inserted in the snorkle area of the air intake where teh snorkle meets the metal intake.
Testimonial: "Thanks for the reply, it was a loose gas cap once tightened it all cleared. This was very helpful."

The drive shift position indicator light on the instrument panel stopped working because the bulb is burnt out. This light in instrument cluster panel is called "D shift" light.
To remove this "D shift" Light bulb.follow this procedure as follows:---
1) Remove the 2 philip head screws on the upper part of black plastic cover around the cluster.
2) Then remove the plastic trim around the ignition key cylinder and another plastic trim on the left side ( the seat memory and remote mirror switch are in this trim) and both of these trims just pop out.
3) Once this is done remove the black plastic cover around the cluster.
Note:--When removing the two "trim pieces" and the black trim piece surrounding the instrument cluster, please be advised that the metal clips may break. So, its advisable to purchase 3-5 of these in advance (appx. $.50 apiece), before you begin this project. You can get this from any local auto part store. Also When removing the black trim piece surrounding the instrument cluster, you should disconnect the electrical connector on the left hand side before attempting to pull the piece out. There is a small tab on the top of the white electrical connector. By pushing down on the tab and pulling out at the same time, the plug can be easily removed from the socket.
4) The cluster is held by three screws. You will need to remove 3 philip head screws that hold the cluster. Remove the cluster out of its housing and carefully disconnect all the 3 connectors.
5)Then place the cluster face down on a towel to protect the clear cover(its very delicate so dont apply force). You will see the 'D' light from the back side. Just count the indicator light start from the bottom until you get to ' D'. Just use a small flat head screw driver and turn counter clockwise to remove the bulb. If you are not sure it's the right bulb you just removes, just shine the flash light behind it .This will let you confirm that you are removing the correct bulb which has to be replaced.
For the exact location of "D light" see the fig below:--

If you have MIL get the codes scanned, at least they will help point you at the real cause of the problem. For the moment ignore the VSC warning until the MIL has been successfully diagnosed and cured. Nine times out of ten curing the MIL will resolve the VSC warning.
