2003 S-10. ANTI-LOCK BRAKE LIGHT AND PARKING BRAKE LIGHT COME ON AND THEN THE SPEEDOMETER STARTS GOING CRAZY AFFECTING THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTING. THE LIGHTS AREN'T ON ALL THE TIME BUT IF I SHUT THE TRUCK OFF AND RESTART IT USUALLY THE LIGHTS STAY OUT AND THE SPEEDOMETER AND TRANSMISSION WORK PROPERLY.
Any code's stored in the ABS ? The VSS - vehicle speed sensor is an input to the PCM - engine computer . The PCM sends this info. on the class 2 serial data network to the instrument cluster . The Instrument cluster has a microprocessor that deciphers all relevant data , speedometer , tach , fuel level , temp. etc... an through the use of stepper motors controls the gauges . Do you know what a module serial data network is ? Do you know what computer controlled systems on a automobile are ? The ABS - anti lock brakes need speed info. also , as does the transmission for shifting point's . The parking brake light is more then just to let you know the parking brake is set . ABS problems , low fluid level in the master cylinder will also turn on this light . Having the vehicle hooked up to a professional type scanner should be the first step in the diagnostic process . Check DTC'S , view sensor data parameters .
Engine Coolant Temperature Gage
The IPC displays the engine coolant temperature as determined by the PCM. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the engine coolant temperature. The engine coolant temperature gage defaults to 100°F (40°C) or below if:
• The PCM detects a malfunction in the engine coolant temperature sensor circuit.
• The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.
PRNDL Display
The IPC displays the selected gear position as determined by the PCM. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the gear position. The PRNDL displays blank if:
• The PCM detects a malfunction in the transmission range switch circuit.
• The IPC receives a class 2 message indicating the park position and the column park switch indicates a position other than park such as an open input.
• The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.
Speedometer
The IPC displays the vehicle speed based on the information from the PCM. The PCM converts the data from the vehicle speed sensor to a 4000 pulses/mile signal. The IPC uses the vehicle speed signal circuit from the PCM in order to calculate the vehicle speed. The speedometer defaults to 0 km/h (0 mph) if a malfunction in the vehicle speed signal circuit exists.
Tachometer
The IPC displays the engine speed based on the information from the PCM. The PCM converts the data from the engine speed sensor to a 2 pulses/engine revolution signal. The IPC uses the engine speed signal circuit from the PCM in order to calculate the engine speed. The tachometer defaults to 0 rpm if a malfunction in the engine speed signal circuit exists.
You could have any one of a number of different thing's causing your problem . Hooking up a scanner probably would point to the gremlin .

I have had a trany shop recommend you change the speedometer transducer that is in the instrument cluster. according to them a dealer has to do the work and it cost around $300-$400.
I have an intermittent problem with shifting out of OD and acting as if it is slipping and very harsh shifts with OD light blinking. Sometimes the problem corrects it self sometimes you have to turn the truck off and restart

There is probably a problem with you anti lock brake system. Have it checked at your local dealership. Brakes are a problem that should never be let go.
SOURCE: Dash board parking brake and ABS lights stay
you have an abs fault. have your abs system scanned for codes.
your base brakes will continue to function normally
SOURCE: transmission won't shift out of 2nd
I have had the same problem before. Everything you have said matches the exact problems I had. I was also driving down the road when my problems started. My speedometer stop working and my car wouldn't shift out of 2nd. I had a family friend who is a mechanic check it out. He hooked it up to the computer and it ended up being the Turbine Sensor. However you would want to hook it up and find out exactly which sensor it might be because there is another sensor that can cause that problem as well. I think this happend to me about a year ago but the part costed maybe around $30 or $40.

One of the sensors has gone bad and needs to be replaced, the other thing to that would also do that is the ABS sensor is dirty or needs to be re gaped to the speed ring on the hub. There was a issue bulletin with your Tahoe on the ABS activating under 8 km/h. Good luck and hope this helps, if not clean out the sensor with brake parts cleaner and check the wire harness and ABS sensor bracket. Re gap the sensor to the speed ring hub. Here is the bulletin.
