1992 Nissan Sentra making a hard clunking noise when shifting

could be the breaks or the suspension strut tops, struts spray grease in the gap around the top, breaks could be the discs while they cold or the brake pads retainers.cold changes metal parts makes them shrink and then when they warm up they expand.

The shifter needs to be inspected. The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and suddenly this occurred then its shifter assembly alignment issue.

It sounds like the valve block, propably the2-3 shift valve is fluctuating , possibly worn. or a weak spring.
You would need to remove, open and check the valve block.
Has the ATF been changed recently ? because that could cause it. New oil could flush the valve block so its very clean , removing any debrit ,and then it loses its integrity

Do you have a CVT? (Continuosly Variable Transmission) I doubt that you do so if you dont, nissans are known to have hard shift into second gear you mean.(Once the car moves, its already in first gear) so if it shifts fine into other gears, I wouldnt worry too much unless it gets worse.

check fluid level first, run car for at least a minute with the the trans in the park position.
turn off car and check the fluid level within 10 seconds, top up if necessary.
The fluid could also be burnt and the filter inside the trans could also be blocked, otherwise your trans is on its last legs.
Filter replacement is a job for an experiened mechanic, The trans sump needs to come off.
The trans also contains electronics of which contaminated fluid could also pose a problem.

akockristo: Let me see if I can help. Engine mounts, when they fail, allow a lot of movement which translates into "Clunking or thumping" noises under initial acceleration.
Here is a test you can do but it will require the help of a friend.
With the car in a safe area, parked. Open the hood and have your friend stand to the side of the car with his or her feet away from getting run over.
You will be in the car and will have the parking brake set and will hold the brake while you put the car in a forward gear. With it in gear apply power while holding the brake and have you friend watch the engine. If the engine jumps or lifts significantly, that will confirm my suspicion that you have a motor mount which as failed..
Now test the car in reverse to see if you have a problem with the opposite mount.
You can have you friend be the driver if you want.
Sometimes if you can find a safe place and a curb the right height, you can also use the curb as another means of blocking the front wheels as you apply power.
The next test would be for checking the axles. Usually if you make sharp turns in a parking lot you will hear a Crack, crack type sound if the CV joints are failing sometimes it can be mistaken for a clunk when in a straight position.

Sorry to say sir but running out of fluid/ transmission oil will definitely fry your tranny.
