SOURCE: getting better gas milage....

Hey there, well if its anything like mine(91 cressy) its pretty thirsty! but things worth checking(if u havnt already) are the engine timing, fuel filter, air filter, as they will make a huge differnce. still im getting 11L per 100 around town, and i dont exactly flog it. and about the octane, i realy wouldnt worry too much if its just the non turbo version, although sticking to 91octane or above is always a good idea. usually only costs a few extra dollars a tank for 98 octane here in Australia, so i think its worth it.

Cheers
Andrew from Queensland

SOURCE: My 06 Navigator calls for premium 91 octane

You're truck requires the higher octane, because your engine has a higher compression ratio. It will give you less proformance, even if you don't notice it. You need the higher octane so you get the best combustion for the compression ratio of the engine. Over time it could effect your motor, such as carbon build up in your cylinders.

SOURCE: My 06 Navigator calls for premium 91 octane

You are not hurting your truck at all... the engine computer adjusts to the lower octane... you may notice a slightly higher fuel consumption with the lower octane fuel but the money you save on lower octane fuel offsets the mileage.

Octane Myth

What is octane? Octane cannot be seen, but it is of utmost importance when it comes to gasoline. One thing for sure, higher octane fuel costs more. Allot more! Simply put, octane is a measure of gasoline's ability to resist detonation, which you hear as pinging and knocking in your engine. The higher the octane the more the fuel can be compressed without detonating before you want it to. Detonation, ping, knock, whatever you want to call it, occurs when the air/fuel mixture ignites before the spark plug fires. The mixture ignites from compression and not from the flame of the spark plug. In other words, the higher the octane the less likely it is to ignite prematurely. The only benefit to a high octane fuel is that it allows an engine to run at a higher temperature and with a higher compression ratio without pinging. Higher octane fuel does not provide more energy, more power, better mileage, more torque, burn cleaner, clean your engine, and is not better for the environment. If the engine is pinging when using the correct octane fuel, then it may be necessary to move to the next higher octane to prevent pinging, and damage to your engine, unless there is another problem. If you are using higher octane fuel for any of these reasons, STOP, you are throwing your money away. Also, never use a lower octane fuel than is recommended by the manufacture. If the manufacture recommends 89 octane then use 89. If they recommend 87 then use 87. The key is what was the engine designed to run at to achieve optimum performance and mileage? One exception is when you are towing a heavy load with a vehicle designed to run on 87 and you experience pinging. In that case it may become necessary to switch to 89 while towing. In conclusion, race car engines are designed to run on high octane fuels due to their high compression engines. You cannot make your engine a race engine just by upping the octane. Save your hard earned money, and use exactly the octane you need.

Which octane is recommended for my infinti g35

yes....87 is perfectly fine and should be used all of the time with confidence. The higher octane fuels can sometimes help with a knocking engine but are mostly used for higher end vehicles.

Been using 87 octane in '02 maxima for 1yr. have replaced oxy & nkock sensors. Is this due to low octane?

Ok the 2002 Maxima 3.5 requires premium fuel 91 octane. According to the owners manual for optimum performance use 91 octane, you can use 87 octane unless you get pinging sounds. Sounds like you just need to use the proper octane. Occasionally I will run regular 87 and can really feel a loss of power. When I use 91 octane the car is a rocket ship.

What octane fuel used in 98 Cadillac 4.6

having over 30 years with general motors and 10 with cadillac the standard 87 octane can be used in your northstar engine
premium is noted on the dash cluster to the owner of course for the price they paid for a 300 horsepowered engine seems they octane should be using the highest made octane to use. it is another bad reflection from general motors in their part. I owned a 96 de ville and always ran 87 octane and took it out west in 98. I cruised at 90 mph through Nevada and received 29 mpg

Is it harmful to a car to switch between uleaded and premium gas in a car? I have a 2009 Honda CRV and it says in the manuel that I can use anything 87 octane or higher. I have probably switched about 3...

Premium gas is still unleaded. Using a higher grade gas (ie: 89 or 91 octane) isn't going to hurt anything, and it isn't going to help anything either. You should stick to regular 87 as the higher octane rating gas isn't giving you any advantages.

I use unleaded plus ALL the time for my car is that good or not good. whats the difference between regular unleaded, unleaded plus and super unleaded? which is best to use?

THE BEST THING IS TO USE WHAT YOUR SERVICE MANUAL CALL FOR. REGULAR UNLEADED 87 OCTANE - UNLEADED PLUS 89 OCTANE - SUPER UNLEADED 91 OCTANE. UNLEADED PLUS ITS OKAY. TO USE EVERY NOW AND THEN I WOULD USE 87.YOU CAN RUN 87 - 89 OCTANE.BUT DONT RUN 91 OCTANE ITS FOR THE HIGH PERFORMANCE ENGINE.

Octane

87 octane is what your car is built to run on. Anything higher is throwing your money away. A lot of people are under the impression that higher octane is 'good' for their car, when it does nothing but empty your wallet quicker. Of course, there are many cars requiring higher octane than your civic, they are engineered to run at peak performance and efficiency on higher octane (Acura vehicles for example). So enjoy your civic and and the $ u save on 87 octane!
