Sounds like the neutral safety switch has gone bad. These are on almost every kind of vehicle now. The switch prevents the car from starting unless the automatic transmission is in park or neutral. For a manual transmission, the clutch pedal has to be depressed. On a motorcycle, the clutch handle has to be depressed. You can pick up the switch at any parts store near you and replace it yourself if you are mechanically inclined. If not, I'm sure a tech or dealership will be glad to help you with the problem.
Good luck!
Thanks, that's what a guy told my boyfriend. I have ordered the switch but the dealership said it required pulling the transmission out, taking it apart and putting the switch in. Do you know if that is correct?
I did a little research. Some people have paid gobs of money for this at their stealerships. Take a look at this post.http://www.justanswer.com/buick/50onp-bu... There is a diagram here showing the switch. I also saw where one gentleman found the wiring to this switch too tight. He loosened a clamp to free it up some and the issue resolved. I really hope this helps. Good luck!

SOURCE: Starter won't start on 86 buick regal FI 3.8 L already replaced starter & verified all fuses ??
If you remove the starter you can use a pair of jumper cables to see if it is bad . Just hook cables to car battery ( car not running ) and touch ground to casing on starter and the hot to post . If it turns the torque will cause it to want to move if not secured .
