2004 mercury mountaineer ignition problems

2004 mercury mountaineer as soon as key is turned to 3rd position(on/run) engine starter is activated and engine turns over, wouldn't be a problem but starter sometimes runs longer then necessary and grinds as if holding key in start position after engine is running. I believe it is related to a unknown device that recently came loose hanging near brake pedal I replaced zip tie that had snapped but there is a black wire that is snapped with no indication of where it goes, box is translucent black, looks like a vertically elongated D where wires enter flat part of D and green light constant at rounded part of D. Any help or suggestions appreciated will try to load pictures after work, THANK YOU

SOURCE: 2001 Mercury Mountaineer won't start

Have a load test done on the battery. If it checks out good, take a voltmeter to the battery and have an assistant rotate the engine. If you see more than a 2 volt drop when the car is being started, the starter is heading south.

SOURCE: brake lights stay on when vehicle shut off

The BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH needs to be Readjusted, Simply Move it Closer to Pedal Arm to Adjust. There is a NUT that you must Turn to do this. If you take a Good Look at it it is SELF EXPLANITORY.
I Hope this Helps , Well I Know it Will as it5 is OBVIOUS as to what the Problem is. Have a Good Day

SOURCE: 1997 Mercury Mountaineer What is Catalyst Efficiency Below (Bank

it means the catalyst is worn out, the efficiency is monitored by sensors, when the Cat falls below a certain reading or "threshold" the code is generating telling u that u need a new catalytic converter.

2002 mercury mountaineer just dies while driving it has a brand new battery everything works but doesn't make a noise while turning ignition key

Have you tested for a failed starter or it's solenoid ,
after it stops & you have nothing ?

Could be your loosing throttle position, if a sensor or
ignition coil is bad, that will shut it down

Check for OBD Codes

2004 mercury mountaineer will not roll over

have the head lights on and look at them while someone tries to start it...if they dim your battery is probably bad. If they don't dim you may have a bad solinoid on your starter.

2oo3 mercury moutaineer wont turn over from ignition but from silenoid it will. any ideas

Sounds like your Interlock switch on the Brake pedal switch or the linkage in the shift cable is out of time. Check brakelights.

There was a problem in vehicle lurching when started. There were 2 different ideas to solve this. One system would allow the starter to work and the engine to run, but made shifting out of Park impossible without a foot on the brake. The other system required the foot on the brake and this signal would allow the starter solenoid to get a pulse from the Ignition switch. Some required the Gearshift to be in Park or Neutral before the brake signal could clear the Ignition and provide a pulse.

So your brake pedal switch probably is out of position or broken. If it is good, then the Gearshift position must be slightly off.

Also check the small wires on the solenoid to see if Voltage is present whenkey is turned to start and foot on brake.

Low oil pressure is shown on read out on dash when key is turned to second stage on ignition.

Is this when the engine is running? If yes, then replace the oil pressure sending unit. If no, it is normal, there won't be any oil pressure if the engine isn't running.

No power to the exiter wire on the starter cilinoide

starters are simple, big cable supplies direct power from battery. little wire gets power from starter relay after ignition switch is turned to on position. relay is located under hood in relay box on left fender.car safety neutral switch also has to be aligned and good try starting in neutral.

As soon as I turn the key to the on position, the engine turns over

The problem is either in the mechanism that pushes the rod that activates the ignition switch from the key lock cylinder, or the ignition switch is defective.
