That's the weird thing there is no check engine light on or any warning light for that matter.also I actually replaced the fuel filter & plugs yesterday thinking maybe that was it.. It only starts acting up way after the car is warmed up and only when I'm idling. I haven't fully let it stall, when it happens I just either put it in neutral and apply a little gas or keep it in drive and just apply a little gas til the light changes.....if you have any ideas please let me know thanks

  • Anonymous Nov 12, 2012

try disconecting your egr valve then test drive the car ok most likely you have a sticking egr valve try then let me know ok

  • Jeff Taylor Nov 12, 2012

So you know how you asked me if the check engine light was on,well i drove to the store real quick and now the check engine light is on so do you think it still could be the erg valve??

  • Anonymous Nov 13, 2012

did you disconect the egr before you drove is yes its normal for check engine light to come on question if you did disconect the egr did it stop doing what it was doing

  • Anonymous Nov 13, 2012

or if you dint disconect the egr an check engine light came on by its self then what you need to do is get a code reader or go to auto zone an get codes

  • Anonymous Nov 13, 2012

from them and let me know what codes came out of it that way we go trait to problem ok let me know

  • Jeff Taylor Nov 13, 2012

Ok I'll go to auto zone and get the codes and then we can go straight to the problem cause I didn't even unhook the egr valve yet! So when I get the codes I'll message you them. Thanks again for helping me out I just hope it's not something to big for me to fix:(

  • Jeff Taylor Nov 15, 2012

So last night I had to run to the store and I think cleaning the throttle body and the air hose and maf sensor worked because after driving it to and from the store I sat in the drive way and let the car idle and I haven't had to push on the gas at a light all day and the check engine light went off but when I did the tune up last week I was only able to replace 3 out of 6 of the plugs because 3 I couldn't get to I think i might need to take it to a shop to get finished...I did notice that when the car is idling now it sputters a little could that be because the 3 plugs need to be changed??

  • Anonymous Nov 16, 2012

wow why dint you tell me that before that you only cheged 3 sparkplugs thats been your problem all this time ,yes take to a shop and replace the othere three plus change your spark plug wires to ok whats helping run little better is you clean mass air sensor ok othere try not to drive your car that way its missfireng to three cilinders your going to mess up your cats ok im glad you got it

  • Jeff Taylor Nov 16, 2012

Oh really I didn't know I could mess it up! Thanks I'll take it to the shop and get a tune up cause it's actually starting to run a little crappy again:( but if for some reason after I get the tune up it is still running bad I'm sure you will hear from me again lol! Anyways thanks again you saved me alot of money and time.

I was wondering is there a way to put a v8 caddy motor in a 96 pontiac grand prix se 2 door coup. The motor in my grand prix is a 3100 v6

I would get another 3100 because there is noway you want to try swapping them. It won't work. A used 3100 isn't that high any more.

Have you tried different gas? That was a problem I had with a Grand Prix I once had. You can also try what i believe is called seafoam. You buy it at the auto parts store. My husband put some in the tank of the car I have now (was sitting a long while before we bought it), and it doesn't seem to hesitate any more.

I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix with a digital climate control system. The heat quit working, it doesn't blow out any heat. Now that it is warm outside the air stopped blowing out any air. The digital temperature on the climate control is not correct. When it states that it is below 30 degrees on the ext and it is warm outside the air wont be cold. Once it starts going above 30 degrees the air gets colder. Today the blower stop working all together. Was told it maybe the climate control unit was bad. You can hear the door opening/shutting when you switch the temp from cold to hot. But there was no heat blowing out whatsoever in the winter time. Could you please give me your opinion on whether or not it is the climate control unit or something else?

Sounds like your transmission is slipping or your torque converter is bad.---check the transmission fluid level and see if it smells burnt and discolored.

The engine of my '96 grand prix sputters, and there is a clicking sound. I can't get it to go any faster than 23MPH.

could be a spark arcing. When it's dark outside, open the hood and fire up the engine. Then enjoy the electrical light show..

If there isn't one, redefine clicking.

Rpm sputters up in down when i idle at a sign or red light.

Sounds like the Idler solenoid that is on the throttle body. They get carbonized and cause just that issue. They are expensive like $100 bucks so you might consider taking it out and getting some carbon remover just made for selenods like that. I saw some at Kragen Auto, in CA last time I was there.

Cleaning it might buy you 10kmiles but and can help you isolate the issue with minimal dollar costs.
Get a book and find it physically or go to www.autozone.com to find it.

What happens is there is carbon buildup on this type of valve solenoid, and it makes starting and warming up irratic, and is usually related to consistent ideling.
