Now that the weather has turned cold when I start my impala it is making a loud ticking noise that seems to go away once it warms up. I have no loss of engine power or anything associated with it. Although today when I started it to warm up the check engine light was flashing when I came back into the car. I am thinking it is the lifters but unsure.
Yes chevys 3.4 and 3.5 have common lifter noise, have you checked the oil level. I would a better oil ,and I put lucas oil treat in my customers cars after oil changes
Thank you. Mine is a 3.8L but I am still pretty sure the lifters are the issue. I will try the additive.
the 3.8 are the same. all GM motors have the common problem . this is the link to my garage and just look at all the engines I do overhttps://www.facebook.com/TedsRepairs

SOURCE: noise in steering column when starting car in cold
this is simply a fluid issue try draining steering fluid and replacing it make sure to start car after top up and turn steering full lock a few times in each direction and top up to max as required done

Check the fuel pressure regulator. Its next to the throttle boby and has a vacumm hose connected.

Take a broom handle(with the broom removed) or long heavy dowel rod , start the engine when cold and place one end of handle to your ear and the other to different parts non-moving parts of the engine compartment, including the engine to narrow down the location of the noise.

Your lifters have become clogged over the years. Its only after the oil warms up and thins out does it allow oil to "pump up" the lifters. That's why it goes quiet after 5 min. There are several different brands of additives on the market that can fix this problem ,unless you have a more serious mechanical problem, which I doubt.Check your local auto parts store for the additive. Just add it to your oil and "wham!" problem solved. Good Luck!

it may need a lifter or valve adjustment when cold they will tick or knock depending on how loose or worn out then when it warms up they swell with heast and noise stops. after adjusting or replacing it will stop making noise

What about the check light flashing ? That is more important than a lifter issue you can't resolve
can you see if there is a code and please tell me what it is thank you ted ..this is my linkhttps://www.facebook.com/TedsRepairs
The check engine light flashing signals a misfire and when I read the code it was a p0300 random misfire code.
