1995 Galant Idels between 1500 and 2000rpm.

It will not pass emissions due to the high idle and the fact it revs while in park between 1500 and 2000 rpms. Does anyone know how to regulate the idle to be below 1100? Could this be the fuel filter?

Hi, i would say the automatic choke spring broke, this is what controls the cars idle at cold and hot engine tempatures. if it's broke it is no longer able to automaticly regulate the rpm's the for making it idle at hi rpm. hope this could help you.

Could be:
  1. Throttle not returning to idle position due to mechanical issue (sticking);
  2. Leak in intake manifold due to crack or other issue;
  3. Open vacuum port;
  4. Failed PCV valve

Idels high then low eventually cut out

combination of emissions controls and ignition control issues and mine which is a 91 does the same exact thing because the defrost controls cause the engine to rev up high then slow down.. I disconnected the ac compressor so it does not come on..mine has some vacuum issues that I have not corrected yet but as old and as many miles as is on it Im gonna leave it alone until the motor blows up ..it smokes now and has over 300,000 miles on it.. rebuilt twice..5 head gaskets..6 timing belts and even when its really cold outside, it will start up when all my neighbors' cars wont..funny as heck..

When started idels high about 2000 rpm then drops when hot cold ?

the iac probably has carbon built up around it this controls the idle speed try cleaning it first,if not it could be a bad iac or a vaccum leak that the iac takes some time to compensate for to control idle.
