A diagnostic scanning tool was used on my 2007 JEEP COMPASS 4x4 when the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT came on. It read CYLINDER 4 MIS-FIRE. I took the car into a local garage (not the dealer) and they replaced all 4 spark plugs and a burnt out coil for the 4th cylinder. The problem is the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT keeps coming on and the cars performance is also suffering (burning more gas). The code reads the same CYLINDER 4 MISFIRE. I took it back to the garage and they looked over the car for most of the day and could not find anything mechanically wrong after they changed the plugs again and switched coils. They told me the problem is with the cars computer and they can't fix that kind of problem and told me to take it intot he dealer. Is this a simple fix or is it a sympton of a bigger, more costly problem?

Check intake gasket and vecuum hoses near intake runner #4. To do this spray carb cleaner at parting line between manifold and block while engine is running. If leaking rpm will dramatically change. A leak will lean out that cyl and cause misfire

1st, replace your spark plugs(for gasoline engine) or heater plugs (for diesel engines)
if this does not work, have a mechanic check the timing of your engine. Engine timing is checked in the distributor, camshaft, and crankshaft.
