How do i set timing on a 1997 gmc jimmy with vortex motor?
Ok that's pretty simple Put cylinder # 1 on TDC= top dead center on the (compressionstroke piston all the way up). Mark on metal part of distributor (with marker) where the number one is on the cap( that's where the number 1 wire plugs in) Then in-plant distributor make sure that rotor point is pointed to #1 on the cap, turn distributor shaft until this is achieved or as close as possible try to center shaft so you can adjust... ****** or advance to fine tune after you in-plant distributor if needed. Contact if you need more help . Good Luck
If its not too much off it may start, but may hard start and run funny like shaking and low power on take off etc. However if it really off it will NOT start.
Can be does the vehicle have power when you try to DRIVE if it doesn't then that a sure tell tail sign that timing is OFF. Try to take of fast by gunning it should hesitate stumble or even cut off. Let me know... what happened
Oh No........if the oil looks like Chocolate milk then you have a bad Head Gasket. Check under oil filler cap for creamish whites reside and check in radiator for oil mixing. I'm starting to believe that you have a bad head gasket(Atleast) or may be a caked water jacket in head.
OK so that's how it got in there just follow the steps I told you and get the IGNITION TIMING right and you should be good to go... Sorry to alarm you like that I actually forgot that you changed the intake gasket..lol. Contact if you need more help. Good Luck.

i changed the intake manifold gasket,so i had to remove the distributor, i marked and removed when i started to put it back couldnt find the mark so i stopped
i haven't set the timing yet ,will the jimmy run if timing isn't set and what type of noise will it make?
it starts but is making a clunking sound,im going to set the timing as your directions, but is the clunking normal when timing is off?
thank you i will try that and get right back too you
it hesitated and stumble but kept running ,also making a screeching sound, i asked a mechanic in town he said i must have drop something in the motor when i changed the gasket ,but i counted all tools nuts and bolt and i am not missing any and the oil is the color of chocolate milk
i change the manifold gasket because it was leaking coolant from the top of motor, when i remove the intake manifold the gasket it was totally gone in the motor too so coolant may have got in then .There is no oil in rad no white in filler
thank you for all your help i will let you know how it went when i'm done
