i haven't set the timing yet ,will the jimmy run if timing isn't set and what type of noise will it make?

  • grgmoreton Jan 07, 2009

it starts but is making a clunking sound,im going to set the timing as your directions, but is the clunking  normal when timing is off?

  • grgmoreton Jan 07, 2009

thank you i will try that and get right back too you

  • grgmoreton Jan 07, 2009

it hesitated and stumble but kept running ,also making a screeching sound, i asked a mechanic in town he said i must have drop something in the motor when i changed the gasket ,but i counted all tools nuts and bolt and i am not missing any and the oil is the color of chocolate milk

  • grgmoreton Jan 07, 2009

i change the manifold gasket because it was leaking coolant from the top of motor, when i remove the intake manifold the gasket it was totally gone in the motor too so coolant may have got in then .There is no oil in rad  no white in filler

Ok that's pretty simple Put cylinder # 1 on TDC= top dead center on the (compressionstroke piston all the way up). Mark on metal part of distributor (with marker) where the number one is on the cap( that's where the number 1 wire plugs in) Then in-plant distributor make sure that rotor point is pointed to #1 on the cap, turn distributor shaft until this is achieved or as close as possible try to center shaft so you can adjust... ****** or advance to fine tune after you in-plant distributor if needed. Contact if you need more help . Good Luck

If its not too much off it may start, but may hard start and run funny like shaking and low power on take off etc. However if it really off it will NOT start.

Can be does the vehicle have power when you try to DRIVE if it doesn't then that a sure tell tail sign that timing is OFF. Try to take of fast by gunning it should hesitate stumble or even cut off. Let me know... what happened

  • Anonymous Jan 07, 2009

Oh No........if the oil looks like Chocolate milk then you have a bad Head Gasket. Check under oil filler cap for creamish whites reside and check in radiator for oil mixing. I'm starting to believe that you have a bad head gasket(Atleast) or may be a caked water jacket in head.

Ok i need your help I got a 95 gmc jimmy with a 4.3 vortex that's not starting I got fuel coming to the filter but no fuel going to the motor anybody got any ideals?

is there fuel coming out of filter. with it being a vortex motor it could be the fuel pressure is too low to open the fuel injectors or you have a cracked fuel line inside the intake manifold and not allowing the fuel to go out the injectors.

How do set the timing for the balance shaft for distributor with the camshaft timing gear on a 1996 Jimmy 4.3 Vortex 4X4 ?

Pull number one plug out, put your finger over the cyclinder hole, have someone bump motor over untill the pistion pushes air out..now the crankshaft should be close too O. Put distributor in and point rotor to number one plug...

I hav a 98 gmc jimmy rwd 4.3 vortex vin# w it knocks all the time gets louder as u accelerat sound like it in the middle of the engine

i would not drive the vehicle until i had the engine repaired, sounds like you have a connecting rod bearing that is bad or more than 1, the motor will need major repair or replacement it will all depend on how bad the damage is to the crankshaft or any other components. sorry for the bad news but i hope this helps you

Timing Problem??

pull # 1 plug out,put screwdriver in cylinder head and see what mark you need to use, also on vortex there is a dot on the distributer gear that must be lined up with a lateral on the distributer ,so when it drops in it will be on # 1 firing cylinder
