Constant whining noise from fuel pump

    1. Low Fuel

Fuel pumps work by pressurizing the fuel and sending it to the engine. A low fuel level can cause the engine to work much harder to build the necessary pressure to pump the fuel. To analyze the problem, start the car when the fuel is low (below one-fourth tank) and listen for the sound. If the whine is audible, fill the tank immediately. When you start the vehicle again, the whine should be reduced or absent. If not, there may be another problem.
      Damaged Pump

The whining noise may be caused by a damaged fuel pump. The fuel pump may be punctured or dented, reducing its efficiency. To resolve this issue, the fuel tank must be accessed and repaired or removed. The location of the fuel tank depends on the construction of the vehicle. In a vehicle equipped with a carburetor, the fuel pump is often located outside of the fuel tank. With a vehicle that has a fuel injector, the fuel pump is located inside of the tank. It is best to get a mechanic to address this problem.

Impurities in Gas Tank and Engine

      • If the fuel pump is blocked by engine gunk, dirt, impurities in the gasoline or anything else, it will respond with a whine or some other very noticeable noise. Debris in the fuel tank can be sucked into the pump most easily when the tank is low. This debris gets caught in the pump and reduces the pressure. This problem must be fixed by removing the blockage which should be performed by a mechanic. Using fuel additives that clean the engine and keeping the fuel tank filled may also be a preventative measure.

Fuse and relay for the fuel pump

The fuel-pump relay unit is responsible for turning the fuel pump on when it detects the engine is running. When the ignition signal stops, the fuel-pump relay switches the pump off. Problems with the ignition and starting the vehicle often can be traced to the condition of the fuel-pump relay.

    Description

  • The fuel-pump relay is a small unit, typically enclosed in a plastic case. The unit contains several sprockets on one side that are clipped onto the ignition system. The fuel-pump relay is engaged only during the start cycle. If it is faulty, it can take longer to start your vehicle.
  • Location
  • Most fuel-pump relay units are located under the dashboard near the steering column. In some cases, the unit is located in the area where the steering column is mounted or near the engine's firewall. The end of the fuel pump relay is typically located near the center of the floorboard, under the carpet in the front section of the passenger's or driver's side footwell.
  • Considerations
  • In addition to difficulty in starting the vehicle, symptoms of a poorly functioning fuel-pump relay include the following: the car dies then starts a few minutes later; the fuel pump makes a strange noise (humming or clicking loudly) for longer than five to 10 seconds after starting; or the engine won't start after you have engaged the fuel-pump switch.
  • Troubleshooting
  • When your car does not start properly, you can conduct a fuel-injection relay test. Two relays are located inside the fuel-injection system; one of them is responsible for turning the ignition on without turning over the engine, and the other is responsible for turning on when the engine turns.

You can check to see if the first relay is working by touching it while turning the ignition on and off. You should feel a "click" every time you switch the ignition. If the fuel-pump relay is not working, you can "jump" the unit with a small lead jumper cable. You will need to access the fuse panel and insert the cable into the relay unit; the unit will run as long as the wire is inside the relay and can help start your car.

Where is the fuel pump located

Inside the tank. R&R procedures below. Let me know if you have questions.

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

    1. Reduce pressure in the fuel lines as follows:
      1. Turn the ignition to the OFF position.
      2. Loosen the fuel filler cap to release fuel tank pressure.
      3. Disconnect the fuel pump harness connector located under the rear seat cushion on Elantra or in the area of the fuel tank on the remaining models.
      4. Start the vehicle and allow it to run until it stalls from lack of fuel. Turn the key to the OFF position.
      5. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then reconnect the fuel pump connector.

    2. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
    3. Remove the fuel tank from the vehicle. Disconnect the hoses at the pump.
    4. Unbolt and remove the pump from the tank.

    To install:
    1. Install the new pump with new gasket in place into the fuel tank and secure.
    2. Install the fuel tank into the vehicle.
    3. Connect the fuel lines and the electrical connectors to the fuel pump and sending unit.

8.Connect the negative battery cable, pressurize the fuel system and check for leaks.

Fuel pump relay for a 1994 Chevy Truck WT1500

The Fuel Pump Relay is located in the Glove Box under a little cover on the upper left side. The Fuel Control Relay is the left relay and The Fuel Pump Relay is the right. To test these relays, swap them and then try to start the vehicle, or blow the horn. If the horn blows then use that relay for the pump and you may at least drive the vehicle where needed! If the vehicle starts, then replace them as a pair.
