I'd just like to thank the 3 people who replied to my problem, but the screech sound still remains.I own a BMW 320d automatic 2002 E46. I have had the crank shaft pulley, water pump, power steering pump and tensioner arm and belt changed and there is a terrible screeching sound when idling. When the car is stationary and engine has warmed up to normal temperature there a sound that starts very quiet then builds up this will remain until the car cools down. It sounds like a fan belt slipping, but thats been changed to. It also happens when I'm driving along and my foot is off the excellerator and I am coasting. You can hear a slight screech in the back ground Its coming from the direction of the power steering pump.The sound builds and builds and when you rev engine it sounds goes away.Any advice would be appreciated
Your AC pump is starting to faiL. It's starting to bind and putting heavy back pressure on the belt causing it slip and screech. After the car cools off inside, the load on the AC compressor is lower and the sound will die down. Also when the belt gets hot it gets a little more flexible and grippy which also lowers sound.
Take it to an auto AC repair place and have it checked.

sounds like idler bearings but you have to release the tension to check,Also you can check the rest of the pulleys also at this time. I dont think you have to drop the engine.

The belt is worn out,and something may have done this.Remove the belt .and turn all the pulleys,see if one of them is trying to lock up,or will not turn.If all the pulleys check out o k,then install a new belt,and start the vehicle,see if the problem is still there,if it is,the alternator maybe the problem,when loaded,the alternator maybe locking up.I think the belt is worn out,and streched out,and,or the tensioner is bad,but most likely the belt is worn out.
