The idoling is **** and is making smoke from the engine when i start it for the little bit it last going.
I have same car 1989 honda crx, what worked for car was I took the Idle Air Control Valve ( IACV ) off and cleaned it with carb cleaner. What you will need is a 12mm socket and only has two screws, and pliers to take off two small hoses attached to it.. And most important carb cleaner to clean the inside of IAVC. When you turn the key to start, the engine cranks over? You must check for spark and fuel, if one is missing, the car won't run. Pull a spark plug, with plug wire connected and plug on a metal surface of the engine, have someone turn the key to start, while you watch for spark at the plug. It is easiest to see spark with car out of direct or bright light. If you have spark, attempt to start several times, pull a spark plug and check for evidence of fuel (wet) on plug. Let me know what you find, we can then continue.

You say you checked the ignition switch, you are 100% sure that isn't the problem? this year and indeed most 1990's Honda"s has a problem with the electrical contacts in the ignition starter switch, the symptom is the car will run until the key is released to the run position or the engine just stalls for no reason, the switch is very easy to replace and I bet is your problem, just remove the sterring column covers, they are a **** shell cover the screws are recessed on the bottom of the cover, Honda doesn't sell the switch seperately from the key cylinder buy it is sold in the after market, here is a price and picture of the part.
