History: My timing belt snapped, I determined it was a non-interference engine, and i was right. had it replaced and the car worked. It was running rough (rougher than usual) for a few weeks, i noticed the check engine light was on. got it read: either the timing was off or the cam shaft position sensor was bad. I have now replaced sensor and for the past several weeks the light has not come back on. It idles very rough (shakes the whole car) unless i shift into neutral, when starting the car and putting it in reverse it will stall unless i hit the gas immediately. Anybody have any ideas? Any help would be much appreciated.
The Ford Escort ZX2, the 2.0 liter is a interference engine,The valve and the piston kissed each other as they met with a broken timing belt,Just to let you know a cam position sensor does not create rough idle, it can stall the engine at a stop sign, but the solution is a valve job, and who ever put the timing belt on after the job should have done a cylinder effeciency test.
I know this is old but someone else read this. The Zetec in the ZX2 IS NOT INTERFERENCE. This has been proven time and again. All the tech manuals list it as such because they were too lazy to update it since the SPI engine in the Escort is interference. The problem here is that the person that did the timing did not follow the TSB put out by Ford to reset the VCT gear. There is a how-to on Team ZX2 that shows how to do this.
This true i lived that though that that little nightmare
And have put on another 80k on the car and it still idles well and was a daily driver for me

start by pulling hose off egr valve see if idles smoother almost instantly
SOURCE: check engine light on, car shakes while in reverse, stalls ...
it could be your mass air flow sensor? try checking that

You most likely have a 3.8 liter motor. You need to have a obd-2 diagnostic performed. Pep boys, Autozone, Aamco etc. can do this. (Ford also, but costly). If cam sensor failing, code will be stored in e.c.m, and data stream will prove out. The cam sensor failure is common on fords and they are usally available aftermarket (save a few dollars over O.E.M.) . If there is another problem, the diagnostic will help determine. Windstars are also prone to fuel pump failures and ignition switch problems.

I had the same problem with my '05 Stratus SXT 2.4 DOHC. I've replaced the cam pos sensor and it seems to be running fine right now. On the Dodge forums a lot of the guys say that you need to replace the crank pos sensor too. I've bought one of those just in case it comes back again. Hope this helps.

Very common problem is about a dime size hole wearing in the rubber elbow on the PCV valve located on the driver side rear of the intake manifold.
