96 Nissan Altima, 2.4L Auto. Shifter does not always push the inhibitor switch fully into park creating a no start condition. No visible damage/car has 17k miles. Lever-function is a little gummy at Inhibitor Switch. I don't want to screw up factory cable/control rod adjustment - should I toss a switch at it?

SOURCE: 1996 Pathfinder Auto. Wont start. Turn ignition

You need to adjust the park neutral saftey switch. the problem you are having is the truck thinks the it is not in Park so the truck will not start unless it is all the way in park. Take the keu turn half way and move shifter to neutral and see if it starts. Then I cam tell you how to adjust it.

SOURCE: Inhibitor swich

Should be on the transmission. It will be at the end of the cable that comes from the shifter. It will be bolted to the transmission and have a decent sized connector with at least 4 wires going to it. If you replace it you have to make sure it gets adjusted just right or else your car won't start in park or neutral.

2005 Hyundai xg350 wouldn't start now shift stuck in park

It is your Inhibitor switch aka Neutral Switch. It is located on your transmission. Even though you do not have an engine light on, the code is pending. You can have code pulled at auto parts store. Part is $50, easy to install. In the mean time, pop the little cover by the shifter, that says Shift Lock Release, then put a flat head screw driver in there and push UP, move shifter to Neutral, then start.

My 2005 nissan altima won't change from park when crunk up. what could be the problem?

Usually a sign of a faulty brake light switch or lock solenoid on the shifter. You may be able to get the shifter out of park by turning the key to the unlock position but not "on".
There may be a button you can push next to the shifter to unlock in an emergency. Check your owners manual.

Hi, I have a 1996 Toyota T 100 pickup truck and it will only start when it's in drive it won't start in park or any other gear whats up with that ?

Hi, what's happened is your interlock switch has come loose or is busted. The switch is on the side of the transmission. First check the adjustment. If it's wrong, try adjusting. If this doesn't work, replace the switch. Please let me know if you have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

ADJUSTMENT
jturcotte_388.jpg

  1. Loosen the neutral start switch bolt.
  2. Place the gearshift selector lever in the N position.
  3. Align the shaft groove of the switch with the neutral Basic line. Hold the switch in this position and tighten the switch bolts on the A43D to 48 inch lbs. (6 Nm) and all others to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  4. With the parking brake set and the brake pedal fully applied, attempt to start the engine in each shifter range. The engine should only start in N or P .

My 2005 Altima is stuck in park. Automatic transmission, low miles starts right up and steering wheel is not locked. Help please!!!

http://www.nissanclub.com/forums/2005-2006-nissan-altima-se-r-discussion/225903-shift-lock.html

your owner's manual will tell you how to over-ride the shift lock. ususally there is a hole covered by a plastic piece, next to the shifter. pop out the cover and push the button to shift. The shifter will lock back up in park until you fix the problem. You may want to set the parking brake and use neutral when you park the car instead of " Park". That way you will not have to push the release button-it will eventually break.

make sure your brake lights work; as the shift lock is powered by the brake light fuse-replace as needed.

2006 Altima won't shift into reverse or park

Is there any warning lights or malfunction besides this?? There are three main parts that may cause this: Park/Neutral safety switch(located on the transmission), Brake pedal switch(located at the brake pedal), Shift lock solenoid(located below the shifter). P/N safety switch prevents the shifter from shifting out of (P) or shifting into (R/P) while vehicle is in motion. Brake pedal switch sends a signal to release the shifter lock to shift out of park. Shift lock, locks the shifter as describe above and is located at the shifter base. I recommend inspection/replacement of the shift lock solenoid and P/N safety switch as its an intermitted problem. Hopefully this helps
