Engine Warning Light is on, earlier car sputtered and poor power

My son-in-law owns a Audi A4 Quatro Turbo 2003. Earlier today as he and my daughter starting for home the car lacked power and puttered. It was okay the prior day. After borrowing my car for their trip I tried the Audi and the engine sound and power were okay. The engine warning light however comes on and stays on steadily. Since my son-in-law had filled up with gas I opened the gas cap and replaced it in case that was the problem. The car still runs fine but the warning light remains on. What do you suggest is the problem? I have a similar problem with my 2003 A4 3.0 Avant. The light stayed on after starting and produced a rather loud noise from the engine compartment especially when I turned the steering wheel. Checked the gas cap, couldn't find anything wrong with the fuse panel neither.

How much for an Audi A4 1.8 quatro turbo engine

Do you want used or factory rebuilt?
If used, it depends on the mileage of the car that it was taken from.. Used engines typically cost you upwards $700, while rebuilt would hit thousands.

2003 Audi A4 1.8T Check Engine light on

The CEL means there is a Diagnostic Fault Code stored in the Engine Control Unit. There are 1000's of DTC's, so you will need to have it read by a Code Reader. Auto Parts stores like Auto Zone, Pep Boys, perhaps even Advanced Auto often will read the code for you; but by law they cannot clear the codes. Many codes do not cause drivability problems, severe ones will trigger the ECU to run in a Limp Mode, which would require repair work before any trip longer than a few miles. Hope this is helpful.

Oil for 2007 AUDI A4 2.0t Quatro

The best balance of price, quality, availability that I have found is Mobil1 synthetic - it's on Audi's approved oils list. With the 2.0T engine, you absolutely want to use synthetic (the Audi turbo fours are known for oil sludge issues), and you want to do a SeaFoam treatment every 15k miles or so - that combination will keep your engine in great running shape.
