SOURCE: i have black smoke blowing out the exhaust wen i step on the gas
I own a 2004 F-350 with the 6.0 Turbo Deisel...My wife has been driving it periodicll arround town and had mentioned from time to time it seemed to not want to get going. Well yesterday I went and picked the boat up and on my way home the truck lost all power and was spewing black smoke. After reading a few blogs I decided to pull the EGR Valve.. It sits right on top of the engine (from the front bumper looking at the engine) just forward and to the left of the oil filter. Two 8mm bolts and it comes off ( rotate back and forth while pulling up). The EGR valve was covered in soot and partialy in the open position..no matter how far I manually opened the valve it stayed in that position.. After checking the price of a new EGR ., I decided a little home remedy was in need.. I let the valve portion of the EGR ( the lower porting, NOT THE ACTUATING PORTION) soak in fuel over nite. Cleaned the soot off and lubricated the valve shaft. Actuated the valve manualy an few times and it began to spring closed beautifully..A tad more touch up cleaning..reinstalled the valve and was able to hear a feel a noticeble difference in the way the turbo spooled up... no black smoke .. and running smoother... Quick fix..easy fix.. so easy I plan to make this part of my oil change ritual... pull the valve .. clean and lube... HOPE THIS HELPS ! !

SOURCE: Stalling and black smoke
Your truck is fuel injected . Black smoke indicates a rich fuel mixture. This could be caused by numerous items. A faulty sensor, a faulty injector, a misfiring spark plug are some of them. To really zone in on the problem, a computer diagnosis is required to note sensor readings, and repair as necessary.

I had a 1995 nissan pick up with a similar problem, may want to try cleaning out or replacing the EGR valve.
