9 times outta 10 when moisture is involved it's the serpentine belt. Try belt dressing or just a new belt.

  • Anonymous Nov 07, 2012

Ben,I will try the belt dressing first, because I purchased this PT cruiser new in 2004 and it only has 55,800 mile on it in 8 years.Thank you so much for your solution,Mike

SOURCE: serpintine belt

It sounds to me like the belt tensioner pulley is bad.Its spring loaded and this pulley is what keeps the belt in place.

SOURCE: engine noise

If it gets worse when turning the wheel at a stop, then it's the power steering pump. Could be the power steering fluid also. Check your belts for wear or damage. The idle pulley will make a constant noise, sometimes whining sometime screeching. To check idler pulley it is best to remove belts.

SOURCE: noise under right front of hood

This is pretty hard to diagnose without being there. I would suggest that you take a hose with ends cut off and listen through it, since you are mechanically inclined. I would also check things that may be rattling against the firewall, the exhaust system for rattles as they tend to do so when bushings are worn out, and recheck the things you have if you haven't done so with hose or stethescope. I had a similar problem that was a loose exhaust bushing... Hope this helps you, Rick

SOURCE: 2002 PT cruiser trying to start with no keys!

I would check your wire harness. The starter is close to where you would be working on the radiator. I have not had the pleasure to put one in but i know its a tight squeez in there.

PT Criuser has been running hot and now makes a loud chirping sound when cranked up . What causes this ?

my guess is your water pump is not working properly and the loud chirping sound is from the serpentine belt which also runs the water pump, alternator, ac and steering pump. first thing to check is coolant the cooling fan , thermostat , water pump in this order. chirping sound definitely come from the belt but the cause could come from any of the driven part but im zeroing in on the water pump because the car is running hot. old belt could also cause the chirping.

2004 ford taurus chirping noise when engine revs

Hello, There are several things which can do this. First, cut off the A/C and then rev the engine as before. If the chirping goes away, the noise was either the A/C clutch or the Serpetine belt slipping with the load. For the A/C clutch, you can try a little rust removal between the drive plate and the pulley with the engine OFF. You can use sandpaper and try to knock off the rust. Then put a little oil on to condition the metal. Then try it with the A/C on.

If the chirp is still there, you have to check bearings on the Pulley tensioner, Alternator, Water pump, and Power steering. It is possible for the Pulley tensioner to have a weak spring or you may have a stretched Serpetine belt. This condition would cause the belt to skip under a load. If the belt is checked with small cracks, just replace the belt. Take off the tensioner and compare the spring tension and wobble in the pulley to a new unit at the Autoparts store.

If still no success, the chirp could be a water pump bearing. The old way off using a piece of wood on the housing of a part while the engine is running is dangerous, but effective. I believe you should have already found your problem before this measure is needed. Dry Serpetine belts make quite a lot of noise and is probably your problem.

I hope my Solution is very helpful to you.

I have a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser with over 200,000 miles on it and I am hearing a high pitched chirp from if when I first start it every morning. The belts have been checked and they are fine. Could it...

Could be any of the componets that are making the noise, one of the most common is the altenator trying to charge a weak battery [ the altenator goes into highest charge mode causeing the belt to slip a little. have the battery checked.

Serpentine belt makes chirping noise.

When the belts age they dryrot like tires, Twist the belt upside down and bend slightly, You will likely see cracks, Just replace the belt and you should be good to go

1995 deville when remotes are used NO horn chirp or light flash

When the car was built they did not have the chirpping option. I had owned a 95 & a 96 both purchased new and that chip you will not here from a factory unit. Maybe aftermarket has that option if you know someone with the chipping noise in their Caddy. I also worked at a Caddy dealership for 7 years and never heard one chirp in any 90's model

1999 Grand am gt chirping noise

Certain brands (cheapo) of serpentine belt will do this. It is because the new belt is thinner than the old belt. This causes reduced spring tension by the belt tensioning device. Other possible problems are a bad belt tensioner, driving through deep water and getting the belt wet while driving or a defective crankshaft harmonic balancer assembly.
I HATE Dayco brand belts, because they do this a lot. I would have the shop inspect the parts mentioned above. If they are OK, tell them you want a new belt (for free).
