Power steering pump sounds dry, but isnt

If you mean steering properly I can only speculate what your Stratus is doing.Steering related if it does not have power assist and turns hard sitting still try revving the motor slightly while turning the steering wheel if it feels like it turns easier then you may have a pump issue if it isn't easier then you still may have a pump or gear issue.If when driving it wanders you may have a suspension or steering component wear issue the same if it feels like it's binding while turning.These were common for outer tie rod ends wearing first as miles accumulate.

Its hard to describe noises simply by text of course. I feel sure you have checked your power steering fluid, but in case you haven't do that first and try to make sure it has the correct fluid. A remote possibility would be CV joints, but they tend to make a clicking sound. A worn out PS pump or one low of fluid can indeed make a roaring sound. Pumps normally work flawlessly past 100,000 miles.

sounds like your fan belt is slipping ! hence that why the battery light comes on because alternator isnt turning or turning slowly and your power steering pump wont be turning also ,,,making steering difficult ! fan belts can be adjusted at the alternator i think thanks :)

I do not believe you can drive it with the steering pump "disabled". The only way I can think of to disable it would be to remove the belt from the pump. I don't believe what you were told. If you are mechanically inclined, the pump is not too hard to replace, but have you tried bleeding it? If it was dry, there is probably air trapped in it, that would make it jump. But why was it dry?

Well if your sure that it really is the belts the job isnt too hard. Refer to your owners manual for a clear view on how to replace them. I feel that every car owner should own a car manual for the car that they own cause they really do come in handy and are very informative. My question for you is how did you determine that it is your belts that are making the slipping sound? An oil pump that is no longer pumping oil will cause your engine to make almost the same sound and the squeal that you hear is the cylinders lacking lubrication. You might want to check your oil pressure just in case.

You could have a problem with your power steering, but some simple things to check is to first see if your power steering pump reservoir is full of fluid. If it is low or empty, your steering will suffer, and worse would be the power steering pump will fail if you run it dry too long. If it is low, fill the reservoir, and wipe down the hoses and pump before you start the vehicle, so you can find out a general area of where the leak is coming from.

It was the ABS system kicking in to try to keep the wheels from locking up. The squealing you heard was indeed the tires "sliding" across the surface in protest/resistance to your turning input thru the steering wheel. If you are not comfortable with that feeling go ahead and take it to the dealer/repair shop and have the ABS system checked/tested. (preferably the dealership)

Hello, from the sounds of it your power steering pump is going bad. Two things to check is one, pull off the cap and smell the fluid to see if it smells burnt. If it does you will need to change the power steering pump. Another thing to check is to make sure the belt is good and snug that runs the pump, the noice could be the belt slipping. You may need to tighten it or change it depending on how it looks. I'd check the belt first as that is the cheaper fix.

If someone has adjusted the adjustment at the top of the steering box too tight you will have that type of feel in the steering.

Is the belt on the power steering pump tight or loose does the pump makes a huming noise when turning steering all these are causes of hard to turn steering belt need to be (tight) on pump and pump must not be huming when turning steering add fluid if needed and play with steering to see if help if not need to replace pump
