Charging system I have a 2003 Mazda6 2.3L Automatic with approx. 168k miles on it. Last Friday, I was on my way home from work, I was at a stop light and when the light turned green and I put my foot on the gas to go, the car "jumped" a bit and my battery light came on. I continued to drive for about a mile or two, with no "power." By power, I mean that it drove... it just had no "get up and go." I got to a lot safely and parked it. Other than lack of power and the battery light, I had no problems driving it. No funny noises, no driving rough and no stalling. I had it towed to my parent's house and my stepdad replaced the alternator and charged the battery while doing so. Still no "power" after everything was replaced and he test drove it. He let it sit overnight and it drained the battery that was fully charged, as well as blew out my dim lights and rear parking lights. I bought a brand new battery and he replaced that. Still no "power" when he test drove it again. My stepdad's neighbor said that he could tell by the smell that the catalytic convertor was clogged. He let it sit overnight, intending to clean out the cat today... it drained the brand new battery!!! :o( ANY SUGGESTIONS??? Within the last two years, I've replaced the power steering pump, belt tensioner, plugs and wires, MAF sensor, temperature sensor, upstream O2 sensor, Camshaft position sensor, had my timing adjusted and some other **** I can't remember right now. I'll never by another Mazda...

SOURCE: Check engine light intermittently flashing, car jerking.

Could be fuel or electrical related. Since you may not know the history, this may take a while.
Any amount of smoke from exhaust? White, Blue, Black?
Start with most obvious and inexpensive:
1. Fuel filer clogged (replace fuel filter).
2. Could be the ECM (Electronic Control Module). It controls the ignition spark timing.
A few other things... consider other expert solutions...

Have a 2003 Barina. Driving home and noticed the dash lights fading. Then the airbag light came on before the car lost power steering and electric windows stopped working. Lights died.

Start by insuring the battery and charging system are good. Some of these systems act very strange if the battery charge gets low.

The battery light is on and the break light and now it will not start

The warning light means the alternator is not charging the battery.
I would clean the posts on the battery first and see if the light goes off.
If it stays on, you will need to have the charging system checked.

Last year my 2003 neon stopped running and we had the timing chain replaced WE got 40 miles and the car stopped then wouldn't even turn over we changed a fuse and got it to run another 70 miles to limp...

I would say yes, if it wouldn't let the car run, then yes the wire may be frayed now, repair the wires first and eliminate that problem . then have the codes read,

Oil light goes on...had a dry stick 4 1/2 qts put in. no oil on ground. after oil change light went on at 70 miles.. on 15 secs then off for 5 miles then on again 15 secs--- off 4 miles--off 3 miles- off 2...

if it's not going onto the ground, and it's not being burned, check the positive crankcase ventilation and the exhaust gas recirculation valves for oil seepage...also check your air filter, if its got oil on it replace the pcv valve.

Air Bag Light, Brake Light, & ABS Light came on in the dashboard.

Check and see if your alternator is charging
Low voltage will cause those lights to come on, as the computer is shutting down.

To check your alternator you will need a volt meter... WITH the engine running you should have about 14 volts coming out. IF NOT you need to replace the Alternator!

2003 cts will not start - 101,000 miles

it sounds like your alternator let go, therefore your battery is not charging, you will need to investigate further but the rattling would be explained by the alternator mechanically breaking internally and failing to charge the battery resulting in your present situation
