It is not unusual for a camshaft sensor (or crankshaft position sensor) to fail. They are replaceable. If the onboard computer does not get the correct input it cannot control the engine timing correctly and automatically shuts down.

SOURCE: DTC - PO340, PO325

My Nissan micro 2004 model just stopped in the middle of the road one day then the engine management light came on, anyway took it to my local garage TWK Thomas who said it was a cam shaft sensor problem. OK so sensor was put on, engine management light went off for two days only. So went back to the garage they said that another sensor should be fitted on the opposite side. And then the problem should be rectified, but i had given the £160 for this problem to be fixed the first time. I decided it was time to take it to another garage Nis Tec they put it on the computer and a code po340 came up would this mean another sensor or the cam chain has stretched please help. ...claire

SOURCE: I got a camshaft position sensor malfunction code P0340.

it sounds like you have bigger problems if your car does not crank(turn over) then your timing belt could have broken and the one piston could be hitting a valve causing it to be locked up.normally when any sensor is bad car engine still cranks it just doesn't start.

SOURCE: code reads P0340 Camshaft position Sensor circuit

That makes the computor think the timing is off. Replace the sensor and see if that does it. You will then have to have the code cleared (erased) or the light will come back on/stay on.

My car is showing p0340 camshaft sensorit was replaced and car still wont start, due to a faulty fuel gauge ran car out of gas also but fuel is on the rail, NO fire, thinking I lost timing, need help

code p 0340 refers to camshaft position(CMP) sensor A bank 1--circuit malfunction===causes wiring---CMP sensor ---ECM
because it denotes bank i ( bank closest to the fire wall) did you change the correct sensor
check for wiring and harness conditions ait it may run close to the manifold and be worn through or broken at places

Can the camshaft position sensor be a problem to start the car

Nope, it will make it crank more before starting, but the cam sensor just tells the computer what stroke the engine is on, the crank sensor is what the computer fires off of. You need to figure out what your car does not have. If it has no spark look to the coils and see if they are getting the signal to fire the plugs. If so, you probably need coils, if not look to the crank sensor. see if you have voltage where you need it. If you have fire check for fuel pressure, if you have fuel pressure and fire make sure the injectors are firing. If it seems you have everything make sure the engine is in time.

2003 vibe will not start

Do you know what Camshaft Actuator System is ?
The standard compression pressure is 1,400 kPa (203 psi).
The camshaft position (CMP) actuator system enables the powertrain control module (PCM) to change camshaft timing while the engine is running. The CMP actuator assembly (5) varies camshaft position in response to directional changes in oil pressure. The CMP actuator solenoid valve controls the oil pressure that is applied to advance or retard the camshaft. Modifying camshaft timing under changing engine demand provides better balance between the following performance concerns:
• Engine power output
• Fuel economy
• Lower tailpipe emissions
The CMP actuator solenoid valve (3) is controlled by the PCM. The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor (4) and the CMP sensor (1) are used to monitor changes in camshaft position. The PCM uses information from the following sensors in order to calculate the desired camshaft position:
• The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
• The mass air flow (MAF) sensor
• The throttle position (TP) sensor
• The vehicle speed sensor (VSS)

This mite be something to look at , Is cam timing advanced or retarded . The ) CMP Actuator Assembly !
