2003 Grand Am Automatic will shift normal from 1-2 but will not shift into 3 or 4.

The transmission will shift normally in Drive from 1-2, but then will not shift any higher... when you let off the gas, it goes into like neutral... then you have to rev up high again for it to go again... it has to rev match the speed for 2nd gear, then it will accelerate again... even taking it to redline in 2nd gear will not upshift to 3rd gear or 4th gear... will not shift manually either... works normal in 1st and 2nd upshifting and downshifting... but will not ever go into 3rd or 4th. reverse is fine. transmission does not slip. no check engine light. is there a sensor or something that tells it when to shift from 2-3 that is bad? where are the sensors located?

I checked the computer for fault codes... I have a P0141 O2 heater circuit bank 1 sensor 2 fault... That is the only fault code... I guess there are 2 O2 sensors... Which one is the Bank 1 Sensor 2?? would this cause the transmission not to shift into 3 or 4?? Didn't think it would be related...

I don't think my scanner will check for transmission codes... Just check engine faults... Do I need to bring it to a trans shop for them to scan the trans for fault codes??

SOURCE: The transmission is hanging up in 2nd gear and not

The absence of 3rd and 4th is imposed by the transmission computer as a precautionary measure. The system has detected fault and rather than risk doing any greater damage has provided a limp home service. It needs to have a transmission specialist look it over and read the error codes. How do your transmission fluid levels look?

SOURCE: 1998 Dodge RAM 1500 won't upshift, slips out of gear

have you dropped the pan to see whats the bands are set at, any debris in pan bottom, whats your governor pressure, if bands are ok, but gov pressures are not relative to speed 1 psi per mph up to 95-127psi, port is on pass side of case rear top right, scan tool would be very helpful, your must have mil light on for this problem, gov dtc's, replace gov transducer as gov solniod as a pair, no exceptions, also are there any 02 sensor dtc's, shorted to voltage, this wil make pcm do stupid things to trans shift, affecting gov signals. GOOD LUCK RDJRP

SOURCE: 1997 pontiac grand am 4t60e goes to neutral during acceleration

Check the transmission fluid.make sure the car is at operating temperature and in park.go to parts store and buy transmission filter kit. automatic transmission works on fluid pressure if it is restricted the tramsmission won't shift right.the fluid and filter are to b changed usually between 40 to 50k miles

Why won't 2003 pontiac grand prix. shifter come out of park?

Shift - interlock system problem .
Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of PARK position. The system consists of the following components:
• The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
• The automatic transmission park lock solenoid
• The automatic transmission shift lock control switch
• The transmission range switch
With the ignition in the ON position, battery voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The transmission range switch provides a path to ground for the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid in the PARK position. With the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid energized the shift lever is mechanically locked in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, de-energizing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position. When the shift lever is out of the PARK position the controlled ground contacts in the transmission range switch open. This prevents the automatic transmission shift lock solenoid from energizing when the vehicle is out of the PARK position.

Slipping transmission

Most of these transmissions cannot be adjusted for slippage. Try an Amaco transmission shop, most will diagnose, tell you what the problem is, and give you an estimate for free.

I have a 4.0 grand cherokee 2000, when shifting reverse gear , it makea a loud sound (TUK). But there is no problem in driving and gear shifting is normal.

Some vehicles with automatic transmissions have enough slop to create this noise normally. If the problem just started or has become increasingly worse, it could be due to worn universal joints. The universal joints couple the drive shaft to the drive axle and the transmission on 2-WD and to the transfer case on 4-WD. Another noise that comes from worn universal joints is a squeeking sound at lower speeds. A vibration could also be noticed with worn universal joints.

Transmission skips as i turn sharp, do I need a new tranny?

No. This is normal in some cars with an automatic transmission. Your transmission fluid can move enough to disrupt it's flow when the car is turned hard and it will change it's function in shifting.
Follow the protocol outlined in the user manual for checking the fluid level.

Transmission shifts early (Is this normal?)

the reason it might be shifting so early is because of the gear ratio in the rear end of the truck. it is common in the 2 wheel drive basic model pickup because they were designed to work not travel.

How do I check the automatic transmission fluid in my 03 grand am 3400 sfi 4 dr

Ensure that the transaxle case temperature is 70° to 90° F (21° to 32° C). With the engine running, shift transmission through all gears. With engine idling in PARK, remove the check plug from the transmission. If transmission has been overfilled, allow fluid to drain out. If no fluid drains out, add fluid through the TRANS FLUID fill cap under the hood on the driver side in 1 pint (0.5 liter) increments until it slightly flows from the check plug. Reinstall the check plug.

Auto gear problem

You will want to check your transmission governor transducer on your transmission, and if you have to replace that...after you begin to drive it the computer system programs the shifting for you. It takes a couple days to get back to normal shifting. Run diagnostic testing on the transmission first, and see if you get a communications failure.

CLICKING NOISE

That is simply the mechanism that keeps your car from shifting unless you have the brake applied. It is louder than most vehicles, but that is one small sacrifice for good quality, cheaper car. The noise is normal.
