2006 galant vibrates badly at idle

Sub 1,000 rpms my car vibrates badly at idle / park, but once i speed up +1,000 rpms it runs just fine, its only at idle, wondering if its the motor mounts, spark plugs or air intake problem.

it has 132,000 miles on it ive had for a few weeks, bought it like that but i didnt really idle it while test driving it, im not the best when it comes to cars im just learning. When you say throttle body i dont know what you mean but i'll look it up. how do i test that if it is that?

oh and would it make it vibrate that bad? if it was the problem? Out of 1k rpms it runs realy smooth

  • Anonymous Oct 30, 2012

there is 2 sensors on the thottle body. 1 is a throthle position sensor and the other is the idle control actuator.cars are very fun today.there are so many sensors on them.. I have been repairs car 25 plus years, and now I just do most head gaskets and motor rebuild. I am on facebook, and some of my work is there.just getting into being online. the link ishttps://www.facebook.com/TedsRepairs

SOURCE: 2000 GALANT - CAR TURNS OVER BUT WONT START

Hi

Buy a bicycle ?

You are having fun !.....................NOT !!!

no 1....Check the fuel inertia switch has not been tripped ?

The problem has to be tied in with something you have done, as it was running till you put your hands on it.

Check back at the battery and make sure you have not pulled off a connection somewhere by mistake in the vicinity of the battery.

Check your fuses with a 12v test light !

Are you getting a spark at the plugs ?

Are you getting fuel pressure to the engine ?

Do you think your cam belt has decided to give up the ghost ? have you ever renewed it ?

Hopefully you have got it running by now ?

If not, try running through these thoughts.

Good Luck !

Please give a FixYa rating, if you think I deserve it !

John.

Idling problems may be cause buy a number of issues.  You may check out the fast idle control valve and PCV if they would need cleaning.  You can check out the timing it may be advanced, that is why you feel that the car runs hard.

Clean the Idle air control motor. It is a vane type. You need to clean the inside with a paper clip. I use brake clean.

Low RPM and Vibration in First Gear

Possible dirty throttle valve and idle speed control valve.

Throttle Body Cleaning on vehicles without electronic throttle control (most 2003 and down)

You can in most cases repair this slow speed stall or unstable idle by cleaning the engine throttle valve and the idle speed control valve using a product called CRC Spray Throttle valve cleaner. Spray the cleaner into the air intake of the engine with the hose removed from the throttle body, the engine will try to stall so hold up the idle speed manually. Once you have used up about 1/2 can of the cleaner stall the engine out while spraying and turn the key off, disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes and then reconnect and drive the car for a about 25 miles of varied driving modes. If this doesn't cure the problem you may need the fuel injectors professionally cleaned by the dealer service dept.

Car wants to turn off

Hi,

Thanks for writing to Fixya.com.

I would check idle adjustment first. There are two idle controls on our cars, so it's not as straight forward as you'd think. There is the base idle (controlled by the screw) and the idle air control valve, controlled by the computer. This computer controlled value is used sparingly when needed. Mostly the car relies on the idle screw control. If this is set too low however, the computer will take over, and you'll think you have idle set correctly, until you let rpms drop from 2,000+ to idle, it will stall, or almost stall.

Adjust the idle screw up until idle raises to 1,000 rpms, then adjust it back down until you get to 850, but no more. If you adjust it more, the idle will stay at 850 because the computer controlled idle takes over. A lot of people (me included) will keep turning the screw all the way down, thinking everything is fine. Don't do it. Stop adjusting once you hit 850 rpms with a warm motor.

This is the easiest, quickest thing to check, so do it first before trying anything else.

Thanks for contacting Fixya and please accept the solution if it has helped you.

Cobalt not running at low rpm.......

All are possibilities but EGR valve makes the most sense. It's famous for causing poor idling and/or stalling at low RPMS. Best of luck.

Rpms Too Low

the idle speed is controlled through the on board fuel injection control module (known as the PCM), even if u raise the idle at the throttle body the computer will slow it back down, however there is a problem that causes slow idle, do the following procedure to correct the slow idle issue, follow it exactly.

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
